Greetings everyone.

I was wondering if there is a way to try GliDos with TR
3dfx demo ? I am looking in buying Tomb Raider but
before doing so I would like to see if the demo would
work with GliDos and VDMS on my machine (W2KSP3
on a Celeron 400Mhz + 400Mb RAM + TNT1).

Therefore, I downloaded TR 3dfx demo and glidos.
I modified glidos.ini to point to TR 3dfx demo directory
and I changed the file size of tomb.exe to the one
of the demo. Now, needless to say since I post here
it does not work. (Launch and die smoothly, quickly)

I then tried to launch setup.exe with GliDos (modifying
glidos.ini to point to setup.exe instead of tomb.exe
and modifying filesize). setup.exe stars then takes
100% of the CPU.

Is there anything that I need to do to fix this ? browsing
the GliDos smart group files section I saw in the 'Public'
folder the files Hmiset.cfg and Settings.dat. Do I need to
do anything with those files ? I copied them to TR 3dfx demo
directory without anymore luck in launching setup.exe or
tomb.exe ...

Any help would be greatly appreciated to experiment with GliDos.

Thanks in Advance.

I launched the demo from a shell window

d:
cd \glidos
c:
cd \tomb3dem
d:gldvesa.exe tomb.exe

I get the following output

C:\tomb3dem>d:gldvesa tomb.exe
DOS/4GW Protected Mode Run-time Version 1.97
Copyright (c) Rational Systems, Inc. 1990-1994
Glidos VESA support starting
DOS/4GW Protected Mode Run-time Version 1.97
Copyright (c) Rational Systems, Inc. 1990-1994
No PCI Bus detected.
Glidos VESA support stopping

Thanks in advance for any advices ...

I've never seen the "No PCI bus detected" message. Looks ominous.

Presumably you have the Glidos server running before issuing these commands? (Not that failure to do so would cause that error message).

What OS are you using?

yes, I do have glidos server running first.

As stated in the first message (W2KSP3) I have Windows
2000 with Service Pack 3. Nvidia TNT 1 with latest drivers
41.09. I have installed VDMS 2.04 and Glidos 1.19.

OpenGLid.LOG contains the following :

-------------------------------------------
OpenGLide Log File
-------------------------------------------
***** OpenGLide Version0.07b3 *****
-------------------------------------------
Date: 12/07/02
Time: 22:35:58
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
Clock Frequency: 400.91 Mhz
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
Configuration file is OpenGLid.INI
-----------------------------------------
Wrapper Class Priority of 32
Wrapper Priority of 2
-----------------------------------------
-------------------------
Time: 22:40:11
-------------------------
FPS = 0.000000
-------------------------

Anything I can provide or do to pinpoint the problem ?

To be honest I don't know. The PCI error is strange.

A few things to try.

* If you are not already doing so, then type DOSDRV before the other commands you are using.

* Alternatively, try running setup.exe and disable sound.

* Try using a fullscreen command window and not using gldvesa; just type "Tomb.exe" not "gldvesa.exe tomb.exe"

Where's a good place to get the demo. Perhaps I should try it out.

Tried all, no more luck. You can download the Tomb Raider
3dfx demo here : http://www.3dgamers.com/dl/games/tombraider/t … mb3dem.zip.html

Anyway, I am going to buy a new computer this week (P4-2.53,
512Mb, GF4Ti4200) hopefully all will work this time.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

I'll give it a try.

Stupid me! The demo isn't going to work. There are two types of 3dfx DOS games. Some use the Glide2x.ovl dynamic link library and some are staically linked. Tomb Raider has been patched for 3dfx in both ways, so you can find two different versions of the 3dfx tomb.exe file. The demo exists only in the statically linked form, and that form wont work with Glidos.

You'll have to buy the game, but it will work so don't worry.

Alright ! As soon as I succeed in finding TR1 (quite rare
nowdays here - I am in France) I will try it with glidos.
$10 is not a big deal after my big X'mas gift to myself 😉

Thank you very much for taking the time to investigate this.

Have a nice day and in advance a nice X'mas and New Year !

(Shall I call you Santa once I can play TR1 ? 😉

At least for now. I hope we (uh, Paul) can figure out a way to dynamically patch the statically linked binaries in the future - but I'd wait until at the very least OpenGlide is pretty solid and, as a benchmark, Glide3 support has started. But it may never happen, either. It all depends.

Yeh, that's right. Games like that may one day be handled by patching the binary. Not worth the effort for the TR demo, when the full game doesn't need it, but there may be some really good games that need it to work at all. SO maybe one day.

Anyway thank you all guys ! I just received (5 mns ago) my
new bought copy of Tomb Raider 1 (Thank Kaminari for pointing
me to the right direction). As soon as I am done transfering
my 20Gb of data to my new machine (bought yesterday) I
will be en route for TR1 + Glidos.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !

(Sorry, for the last 5 mns I feel like it's Christmas ...)
