Interesting article. It seems Home Premium is the way to go for most technically inclined mortals.

Intel i7 5960X
Gigabye GA-X99-Gaming 5
8 GB DDR4 (2100)
8 GB GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (Gigabyte)

Thanks, I'm planning on building a new rig in the next month and will probably put Win7 RC1 on it until the RTM is available, and then I'll buy that and an SSD to install it on 😀

Wow, why did they even bother to make that "Professional" version if they are only going to charge $20 extra for "Ultimate"?

The only annoyance in Home Premium for me is lack of Remote Desktop hosting, but there's always VNC (UltraVNC/TightVNC/etc.) for that so I think I'm with eL_PuSHeR.

Yeah, RDP should be in Home Premium. Also I don't see why MUI has to be an enterprise feature. In this day & age, switching GUI language shouldn't be that difficult...

newegg.com is selling OEM copies of Vista with Windows 7 free upgrade coupons. I'm about to buy parts for a new computer, so I'm thinking of picking up Vista Home Premium for $109.99 and upgrading for free to Win7 in a few months - saving around half the cost: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?It … N82E16832116677

A couple comments on newegg are saying that Microsoft is accepting the coupon codes without requiring that the copy of Vista be installed. Apparently redeeming the coupon will have M$ ship you a Windows 7 DVD once it is released.

The question then is whether the Win 7 DVD can be installed without installing Vista first. Apparently you can: http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs/paul/ … 4-upgrades.aspx

RTM is quite available, even in untouched ISO form. 😀

Seems there's a lot of confusion. Microsoft store says you can do a clean install from the Win7 Upgrade media: http://www.microsoftstore.com/s/windows7?WT.m … grade&WT.srch=1

It's not a problem for me since I need an OS to use on my new desktop until I get Win7 anyways. May as well use Vista x64 instead of Win7 RC1.

Even though it has more features than I'll probably ever need, I'm planning on saving up for Ultimate. 🤣
