Hi guys,

Over the last little while I've been developing a brand new adventure game for MS-DOS, I figured the people here at Vogons might be interested. I've been running a blog about developing it over here: https://chuckjonesdevblog.wordpress.com/blog/.

The game is about an LAPD detective from the 1970s who gets frozen and wakes up in the far future where he must travel around the galaxy in a rocket-powered El Camino and solve crimes. Unfortunately the game is not yet complete but I will keep posting updates on my blog until I'm done (I'm hopefully not that far off). Right now the game runs on:

6Mhz 286
640k ram
VGA card

and has support for PC-speaker, Adlib, Soundblaster Pro 2 (OPL3) and MT32 for funky music.

I've gone ahead and attached some screenshots, there are some more on my blog. I'd love to hear any feedback you might have (either in this thread or on my blog).

Thanks and happy gaming!

That's pretty impressive! I bet you have lots of folks here interested in being testers, myself included. 😉 A lot of us have real hardware retro systems (including MT-32s) that could be helpful to test on. Any thoughts on what you will charge for it and how you will distribute?

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Thanks! I have thought a bit about sale price, that depends on lots of factors that haven't really been worked out yet. My plan is to do a big box release as well as digital so I still need to do some research and talk to some 3rd parties before I get a final price. Distribution of the digital version will be on Steam & mobile app stores with a special version of DosBox included.

6Mhz 286
640k ram
VGA card

Whoa. I don't have extensive experience with 286, but it seems incredible to me that these specs are OK for a VGA game.

It took a lot of effort to get there! But this was not an uncommon setup in the late 80s/early 90s. Been testing mainly on a 10Mhz 286 (clocks down to 6Mhz), which also does a good job of running games like Monkey Island 1 or Jill of the Jungle (both VGA).

Are you secretly Mark from Classic Game Room (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh4syoTtvmYlDMeMnwS5dmA)? Either way this looks and sounds awesome!

Haha, Unfortunately I'm not Mark. I wish I had a collection like his though. If he made a game it would definitely be for Sega Genesis and have a soundtrack by Def Leppard! The soundtrack here is much more like Curtis Mayfield.

Not a fan of the post-ordereddithered ambientoccluded3dscenes backgrounds though... needs a painter's pass with some touchups in deluxe paint afterward

Specifically what kinda touchups were you thinking of? This isn't final art yet so I'd love some hints.

I just wanna clarify that these backgrounds are not 3D renders, for the most part these were sketched on 9x12" paper and redrawn at 320x240 (mode X) and 256 colors using Pro-Motion NG. You can tell by the way my perspective completely falls apart on anything that isn't made of straight lines (hey I'm a programmer 😊 ). I have though on occasion made 3D models for reference.

I hope I'm not annoying anyone with these posts 😊, if I find people aren't interested in progress updates then I'll stop posting these.

I know I am following everything.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Nope, not at all. Rest assured that many of us are waiting for the game and following its progress

I'm also quietly following your thread and I happen to also have been working on my own little project for the past year. There are always people interested in your project whether or not we take the time to make posts. I'm sure when you leak a demo or something the thread will get much more active with responses (both positive and negative 😒 )

You can even pop up threads for programming questions and such and maybe myself or somebody else has already suffered through it enough to offer help. Even willing to run your little demos on my 486 if need be to see if it blows up before you make a final release 😎

Sup. I like computers. Are you a computer?

Thanks for the writeups on this! Always neat to see the details of how a game gets made. Looking forward to playing it. 😀

If anyone is wondering about any specific aspect of the game that I haven't yet covered, I would definitely love take suggestions for what to write about next.
