https://sourceforge.net/p/freedos/news/2018/0 … c-ia16-for-dos/

You may be familiar with the GNU C Compiler from the GNU Project, found on pretty much any Linux distribution. Previously, if you wanted to compile programs using GCC on DOS, you used DJGPP (DJ's GNU Programming Platform) from DJ Delorie. But programs compiled using DJGPP require a 32-bit CPU.

TK Chia has been working to port the GNU C Compiler to DOS, using the ia16 instruction set. While compiling with gcc-ia16 requires a 32-bit CPU, the generated programs will run on any 16-bit CPU. TK Chia recently posted the latest packages for gcc-ia16 at Github. Go grab them!

TK Chia hasn't been the only one working on it - the parent build-ia16 project has most of its commits by our fellow VOGONer, reenigne. 😀

Ran across this DPMI host which is supposed to work with 286 protected mode programs (as well as 386). I didn't even realize this existed. http://www.sudleyplace.com/dpmione/

Also, a thread about getting FreeBASIC to run on Win32S: https://www.freebasic.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=27912

I'd prefer a patch that gets Win7+ programs to work on Vista. 😀

There are (almost) nightly builds of the latest versions of the Build Engine ports of Duke Nukem 3D (the port is called Rednukem), Blood (the port is called NBlood), and Exhumed (the port is called PCExhumed) at:

https://lerppu.net/wannabethesis/

Also there is the fantastic BuildGDX from http://m210.duke4.net/ that runs:

Duke Nukem 3D + addons
Blood + Cryptic Passage
Redneck Rampage + Route 66 + Rides Again
Witchaven 1
TekWar
Legend of the Seven Paladins

And there is another game engine port project for Build games, called Raze, availale from https://github.com/coelckers/Raze/releases. I've not tried it yet, but according to it's Wiki page (at https://zdoom.org/wiki/Raze) it is "...is a source port of EDuke32 implementing several systems as found in the GZDoom source port. It combines EDuke32, PCExhumed, NBlood, and RedNukem in a single package, amongst various stability and renderer improvements".

Supported games

Duke Nukem 3D v1.3D and Atomic Edition (via eDuke32)
One Whole Unit Blood and Cryptic Passage (via NBlood)
NAM (via eDuke32)
WW2GI (via eDuke32)
Redneck Rampage and Suckin' Grits on Route 66 (via RedNukem)

Unsupported, but are semi-playable with bugs

Shadow Warrior (via VoidSW)
Powerslave/Exhumed (via PCExhumed)
Ion Fury (via eDuke32)

Since Release Announcements is planned to be consolidated (after this thread was renamed from "Interesting Links"), does that mean a bunch of threads with discussion will get zapped for a big list post here too?

Focus for now for this thread is posts without discussion or meaningless discussion in Release Announcements . For those with will have to see what to do to cleanup and put on a wiki.

Traffic (downloads, clicks) originating from Vogons announcements tends to be fairly light, even for software that's otherwise resonating with a retro audience. Changes to improve both discoverability and participation will also ensure that first-hand announcers keep the list relevant. Moving toward consolidation will probably have an opposite effect as time goes on.
