The Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) 5.0 helps customers understand their application compatibility situation by identifying which applications are compatible with the Microsoft® Windows Vista® operating system and which require further testing. ACT helps customers lower their costs for application compatibility testing, prioritize their applications, and deploy Windows Vista more quickly.

You can use the ACT features to:

* Verify an application's compatibility with a new version of the Windows operating system, or a Windows Update, including determining your risk assessment.
* Become involved in the ACT Community, including sharing your risk assessment with other ACT users.
* Test your Web applications and Web sites for compatibility with new releases and security updates to the Windows® Internet Explorer® Internet browser.

System Requirements

* Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1; Windows Vista; Windows XP Service Pack 2

* Supported Database Components: Microsoft® SQL Server 2000, Microsoft® SQL Server 2005, Microsoft® SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
* Miscellaneous Software Requirements: Microsoft® .NET Framework, version 2.0

Important: The Application Compatibility Manager, the Internet Explorer Compatibility Test Tool, and the Compatibility Administrator are not supported on Windows 2000; however, you can run data collection packages and the Setup Analysis Tool on computers running Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 (SP4) and Update Rollup 1.

I haven't tested it with this version but if you are using Windows 2000 then read the following thread:

MFC42U.dll from Windows XP

Download and install .NET 2.0 Framework.

DO NOT install the ACT immediately. If you are using Windows 2000 then it will not install all of the tools.

Download Uniextract and install. Right-click on the Application Compatibility Toolkit.MSI and use Uniextract to extract. Perform an MSI administrative install which will extract all of the files.

Copy the files to wherever you want them.

Upon execution of COMPATADMIN.EXE you will receive the following message:

"Compatadmin.exe is not a valid Win32 application."

1) Fire up PE Tools
2) Tools -> PE Editor
3. Open the Executable.
4) Select Optional Header
4) Set Major SubSystem Version to 0004
5) Ok out of everything and exit.

On next execution of compatadmin.exe you will receive the following error message:

The procedure entry point __iob_func could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll.

Open compatadmin.exe and apphelp_xp.dll with Hex Workshop. Replace the text string "msvcrt.dll" with "msvcrx.dll"

Go to your \Winnt\system32 directory and copy msvcr71.dll to msvcrx.dll

Open next execution of compatadmin.exe you may receive this error message:

The ordinal 6928 could not be located in the dynamic link library MFC42u.dll.

This is due to the program wanting a different version of the .dll. Copy mfc42u.dll from a Windows XP computer
