Update the thirty-second!

Like an albatross with unfettered movement and clear skies, Lawnie keeps soaring into the realm of DOS gaming!

This week's scripted video was about Luxtorpeda, a steam compatibility tool that attempts to automagically install source ports on Linux-based systems. Does it do that well? Lawnie investigates! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWBj3pqvaFM

100 More Worthwhile DOS Games returned, with a distinctly chess-based theme. This time Battle Chess was replaced with The Chessmaster 3000. Check! (it out) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY0UoAOvHDU

The Stele Chronicles continued after another week's absence, and this time Maarek has radio trouble in what is otherwise a routine bombing run. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxv3l8FRJsw

The only game from Random DOS Game land really worth playing was Screamer, a fast-paced third-person driving game with that arcade goodness and rock soundtrack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cWprzNn9w8

That's your lot! Until next week of course, when Lawnie undoubtedly shall return with more link spam... I mean, another update!

Well the problem with Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament, (especially Unreal Gold) is that they're using "fan patches" that were made by someone who... really doesn't fully understand what they're doing. (and it's of dubious legality but I rather not go into details with that)

I'd actually rather run the official UT436 for Linux than either of those, but that has gotten so rare to find because even the Arch Linux AUR tries to install 451 instead of 436 for whatever reason. I was even briefly in touch with somebody who could actually make working .so's that will link back to the original Linux UT 436 release, so it'd really only be a matter of compiling UTGLR against that, and having a better written OpenAL using OpenAL Soft and liboprenmpt for music support.

One thing I've been curious about the Luxtorpeda project is, there are games running on the Godot Engine that devs of said games for some reason or another only publish a Windows compile and not the Mac OS/X or Linux compiles, even though the engine works natively on both of those environments. There are people that tried to run Cruelty Squad by simply compiling the specific version of Godot Engine that game used and loading the PCK, but that appears to no longer work anymore and I wonder if that's because of the "steamapi" DLL file that's linked into the Windows version.

Update the thirty-third!

Just when you thought your ad blocker covered every form of spam, Lawnie returns to prove that wrong!

This week's first scripted video was about the exciting world of DOSBox processor cycles and memory management, and how to prevent things from spiralling out of control when auto doesn't cut it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TALEGw3fso0

The second scripted video of the week highlighted the ten differences between the TIE Fighter Total Conversion and the original TIE Fighter from Totally Games. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvCXTTtELy8

In Random DOS gaming land there was only one title that really caught my attention. Something called War... craft? Never heard of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW7Ha1NnkSQ

Maarek also returned with yet another exciting episode of The Stele Chronicles, in which he loses his patience and takes it out on some Y-Wings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOjD9GLynv0

Will there be even more content next week? Of course there will. Until then!

One of the cool things about Luxtorpeda is that it allows multiple engine options per release on the initial install. If you get in touch with them on the Github you could perhaps get the Linux 436 version pushed, if you can find a reliable repository for them to source it from.

It's like looking for a needle in a haystack for that thing unfortunately! It doesn't help that the Linux UT99 I speak of is way back when Loki Games were still a company so it involved their ancient installer, among other old stuff.

Update the thirty-fourth!

Like a falling meteor, Lawnie is back with another update to impact upon the crust of DOS gaming!

This week heralded not one, but TWO scripted videos! Oh my! The first of which was the return of 10 of the Best with a list of great source ports that everyone should have tried out by now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XadYRRfDO7k

The second scripted video was a rare return to actual proper reviewing! The subject for review? The underrated Starcom by Grey Software, a shooter almost nobody has heard about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gFwgw-HBog

Meanwhile is Random DOS Gaming land the pick of the bunch was a turn-based/real-time hybrid strategy game called Alien Legacy. I was most impressed by this title that I had never heard of before! Very Master of Orion in many ways! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aFJK3XY6w8

Will I return like clockwork next week with yet more DOS-related spam to shamelessly bump this thread? Undoubtedly! Will I respond more timely to people trying to talk to me? Less likely! Until then!

You know, I was wondering when someone was going to take a look at that. I have been linking various retro Twitch streamers I've come across to that game if they wanted a obscure shoot-em-up that has abysmal difficulty.

One thing I've been curious about is the music. I can't seem to find any other game that had music done by "Halfmoon Studios" as credited in the game. One of the musicians, "Skye", has a bunch of independent works that you can find on Modland FTP and ModArchive though.

It seems like it's a one-and-done for nearly everyone involved in the game. A single moment of creation that didn't work out, and then that was that. I spoke with Andy Cunningham and he said that he could probably make something far better these days with the tools available to him. He just... hasn't.

I think a lot of developers are like that, for one reason or another life will get in the way and prevent their future ideas from coming to fruition.

Update the thirty-fifth!

Like the gradual erosion of tooth enamel, Lawnie continues to eat away at your precious free time!

This week boasted two scripted videos, the first of which was another 10 of the Best episode, featuring DOS games that aren't available digitally. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxZ2gQQaGMw

I also went outside of the DOS/Windows gaming landscape for the first time and talked about a game that came out for the Amstrad in my review of Burnin' Rubber. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNUY8d7SvSQ

In Random DOS gaming land, Horror Zombies from the Crypt was a delightfully-titled and themed side-scroller that wasn't too shabby for 1990! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IFqD6g_7Is

There was also an excellent little Russian Battleship clone called The Battle on the Black Sea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8WIWdZ0jXw

To cap things off, Maarek destroyed the Narwaak in the 21st episode of The Stele Chronicles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPvzuSuFIL8

Like Milton Berle where there's money to be made, I just keep going on way past my shelf life! Will more DOS-related content be spammed here next week? You bet!

Update the thirty-sixth!

Like the British economy going down in flames, I can't be stopped!

This week sported two scripted videos, the first was the return of the Subscriber Spotlight, where I feature several intriguing accounts that subscribe and/or comment on my videos! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEcr5giirEo

Speaking of sporting, the second video was a significant departure from previous content. A twenty minute review of Championship Manager 01/02 and how it's one of the most underrated strategy titles of all time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcJmIvO_LNc

In Random DOS game land it was slim pickings this week, and while all the games were intriguing in their own way it was only RPG Warriors of Legend that really had me sit up and take notice! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIPLa0YfEL0

Lastly and most importantly, the Stele Chronicles finally reached episode 22. Which is THAT mission, for TIE Fighter fans. The one that has you clearing a minefield in an Interceptor. Somewhat spoilery, it's titled The Inevitable Betrayal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK0y6ohlrik

Will Vogons grow sick of my ever-increasing spam? Will the intrusion of reality grind all production to a halt? Find out, next time!

Update the thirty-seventh!

Like a steam iron burning through a fresh new shirt, I just can't be stopped!

This week's scripted video was hardware related! I turned a 2008 netbook into a retro gaming machine. It was amusing to do so. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOrOJNYygw4

I also returned to my green screen format to randomly talk about Loom! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bql5VzT1SzU

The Stele Chronicles continued, there were four random DOS games and none of them were great, and I released an album of music. It was a rather busy week, all in all!

With that said and done, the new season of RDGS begins tomorrow, complete with a Top 25 countdown from the previous hundred. It's going to be mighty.

Will Lawnie keep posting into the ether? Will he run out of steam for his iron analogies? Find out, next time!

Update the thirty-eighth!

Like clockwork, Lawnie is getting older and starting to rust. Oh, and here's another update too.

This week started off with a bang as the first scripted video was the bi-annual 25 More Great DOS Games! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FtsuY24pis

The second scripted video was a discussion about the few admitted downsides of DOS gaming in general. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXvWbb4m_og

And finally there was a special edition of the Random DOS Game Show that looked at a one-man DOS RTS called Arrakis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bQKQNleTko

If that wasn't enough, there was also a series of great games on the show in general, the first being an intriguing first-person RPG called Amulets & Armor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOxJQiR7vVU

The early 90s top-down shooter survival horror FPS hybrid Jurassic Park was also great fun to revisit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pg2-CVb0Obc

And as always The Stele Chornicles continued, with yet another great supply raid gone awry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhyeknU9ICQ

Is this too much content? Are you drowning in DOS? GOOD. Expect more, next week.

Update the thirty-ninth!

Like muscular degeneration in the elderly, the return of Lawnie with another update was simply a matter of time!

This week had two scripted videos. The first was a 10 of the Best about my favourite splinter companies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WI72UH7_2E0

The second? A first-look impressions video on Dune 2: The Maker, a remake of a remake of a source port of Dune 2. Or something like that. It was quite fun! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qiX6psfXrg

The random DOS games I had to endure this week were largely terrible. The only bright spot being an average little Doom clone called Quiver. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuZfOUG4vy0

That's your lot! Not an overwhelming amount this week, but after beating you over the head with more DOS content than anyone should withstand, you deserve a break.

Will November have even more content? Yes, yes it will. Be prepared.

That game is absolutely hilarious to play in co-op. There's a really, really long duo Let's Play of that played entirely in networked co-op that was really entertaining to watch and it'd be nice to organize a co-op game of that with people around here.

Update the fortieth!

Like a broken clock or an alcoholic carrier pigeon in the 40s, Lawnie is decidedly off-time but got there eventually!

The first scripted video of the week was a 20-minute-long love letter to the RTS genre in my 10 of the Best series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGLDjqNxPNg

The second? The return of 100 Worthwhile DOS Games, this time replacing the irreplacable Stunts with The Need For Speed. How did I get there? Find out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzlT8Z1Xfdc

Random DOS game land was an absolute bevvy of quality content, opening with Command & Conquer of all things! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sysHVrPE0zQ

Not satisfied, the randomizer bestowed amusing id Software puzzler Rescue Rover upon me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx5zLFJHYb0

Last but not least, I struggled my way through Street Rod 2, which has fantastic presentation but a less than stellar driving engine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsvXJ-ejxyI

The content keeps coming? Will it never end? Probably, but I haven't keeled over yet! Until next week.

Update the forty-first!

Like a pizza delivery from a pizza place, more retro gaming content from a retro gaming channel seems sensible assumption. Here's some more blatant channel advertisement!

The first scripted video this week was something a little different though, a review/playthrough hybrid of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault from the heady days of 2002! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buKNvDXMl4s

Switching things up yet again, the second one was a soundfont video focusing on fonts under 32mb in size. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0SCBAC4rnY

In Random DOS game land I had the absolute pleasure of playing one of my all-time favourites, Dune! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jMMUBM7-f8

The other title of interest this week was 3 Skulls of the Toltecs, a point and click adventure game from a Spanish team in the style of Lucasarts! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7KyeFPTRSc

And of course the Stele Chronicles continued with the opening of Battle 6, for those few dedicated TIE Fighter fans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmWojXQyGjM

Will there be even more DOS content next week? Yes, yes there will be! Until then!
