I created an embedded Linux distribution from scratch. It fits on a single floppy diskette. At the time of writing it uses ~1MB of storage. This gives me ~400KB free space to use on any custom software.

Current 5.x kernel compiled for 486 target is nice, but isn't support for at least some of the early ISA stuff already gone from kernel at this point ?

Thank you for this, I will give it a shot on my P3 when I get the chance .

Yes, I think kernal 2.x (2.4?) was the latest Linux kernal with full ISA support.
I'm speaking under correction, however.
I merely can vividly remember that kernal 2.6 introduced many issues with backwards compatibility..
