I made a quick video with Windows 3.11 running fine on my Ryzen 9 3900X system. I have LAN connectivity and proper drivers for sound & video - I can't ask for more...

This is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEbnzPDdF0E

I know it's annoying but maybe consider to subscribe to my channel. ( I have almost no subscribers... 😀 )

The specs:
Ryzen 3900X
32GB DDR4 (64 to 256MB available to Windows 3.11 depending on himem.sys version)
Biostar X470 motheboard with 2 classic PCI slots
Voodoo 3 3000 PCI (PCI slot #1)
Ensoniq Audio PCI (ES1370) (PCI slot #2)
WD 120GB SSD connected to a PCI to SATA adaper (VIA 6421) (using some PCI-E to PCI adatper)
Intel Gigabit CT LAN with NDIS 2 DOS drivers
Microsoft Cordless Wheel Mouse Serial and PS/2 (using the serial port from the motherboard via a header)
PS/2 Keyboard

That's a awesome setup win 3.11 must be quite snappy on that system. I also subscribed to your channel

It's totally snappy. But this is how Windows 3.1 feels also on a Pentium 100. (the interface I mean...)

I will try in the future to capture and edit some VHS tapes in Windows 3.1...

My best video so far.

With a 2GB max filesystem size, and an 8GB per disk maximum usable capacity, that might prove challenging.

EDIT: Unless there's a clever workaround for that or maybe you plan to stick to very short clips and/or highly compressed and/or low resolution.

Either way, nice to see it running on baremetal.

Back in the 90s, I did video capture on Windows 3.1..
I have had been using an Hauppauge WinTV card (full size ISA).
It did encode directly into MPEG-1, afaik..

I assume, other people did similar things back then.
There are video clips on old multimedia CDs from the 90s.
Some are tutorials that tell how to fix/upgrade your PC.
With an resolution of 160x120@256c or 320x240@256, a 15min video fits in a 50 to 150 MB file.

Edit: The good thing here is, that neither Windows 3.1 nor EMM386 (DOS 5/6) have a clue about VME (Enhanced V86).
So Ryzen's little problem with VME does not cause any trouble here.

Another thing I personally love about Windows 3.1x is its ability to run in 16-Bit Protected Mode (80286) - without all the V86 fuss, VXDs etc.
That's what I miss in Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
It can't do that anymore. Standard-Mode no longer is included. 🙁
However, it still can disable virtual memory and VXD support.
There are switches (/) for WIN.COM which make it possible.

Edit: Edited. Typos fixed.

Ryzen for a dos/3x build talk about overkill....
I LOVE IT!
One thing I didn't quite get as never attempted to run sush a setup on anything remotely this new.
Is the SATA card just to enable 32bit access or does Windows 3x not work with the motherboard sata ports at all?

I use PCI to SATA card for the Enhanced mode, which is of course a big deal. From what I've tested and other reports from Win3x.org forum - you cannot start Windows 3.1 in Enhanced mode using an AHCI only motherboard. If you can set SATA to IDE/legacy you are lucky but newer motherboards do not offer this option anymore.

Back to video capture I guess it's doable... Storage wise I can use also ftp and some network drives. I'm curios if there are any PCI capture devices with Windows 3.1 drivers.

My best video so far.

Just out of curiosity - has anyone tried to see if rloew's Win9x AHCI driver will load on Win3.1?
Anyone up for trying?

Maybe we'll get lucky and it won't depend on anything 9x specific and it'll just work?

I think We'd need to write a custom Win3.1 INF for it though.

Yes, WinDoom is totally playable in my Windows 3.11 configuration. Sound is OK, and no problems with music. Of course, the very same WinDoom .exe works in Windows 11 too. I will make a short video soon.

Win9X AHCI driver won't work in Windows 3.1 mainly because it's made for a 32bit Windows.

The AHCI CD/DVD driver for DOS works in Windows 3.1.
