Just inherited an old Dell Dimension V400C built around a celeron 400 from a friend. The system had a few problems as is, but I had a new build I wanted to put in there anyway.

Gateway Slot A board
Slot A Athlon 750 Thunderbird core
384 MB Micron PC100
GF4 MX440
Voodoo 2 SLI
Soundblaster Live
Network card
WD 80 GB hard drive
Floppy
CD drive and burner
Windows 2000 for now

I fired her up and she purred just like a kitten! Decided to take out the Dell PSU and will be replacing since it was only a 200W. I really like the case - it is quite sturdy and well-made. Even had the identical front panel connector so I didn't have to fiddle with anything at all. I think it turned out great!

Gateway Kadoka mobo? Have any problems with that?

That is the one! No issues as of yet at all. I actually have two of these...so there is a spare in case something does go wrong!

Finally got around to finishing her! New corsair PSU. And no system is complete without a little "bling" 😊

Really lovely. I like that case too. For me nostalgia in the late 90s is a Micron case. Dell does it too for that period.

Agreed. The case is near perfect. Really no yellowing or scratches at all. I'm guessing it's from late 1998 or early 99. I remember when my friend got it. I was running a 233MMX at the time in an old Zenith Data Systems box! Originally that was a P100 that I upgraded with a powerleap adapter since the board didn't have the correct voltages.

Anyway back to the Slot A build. I had an Athlon 600 on an old AMD iron gate board (I think an MSI). IIRC I had it running near 800 with one of those gold finger devices. Despite having issues with higher powered AGP cards, it worked great with any 3DFX cards, and I remember using an ATI Rage Fury MAXX primarily. It was a great system at that time and the reason I built this one. I'm really happy with how it turned out, and the board had been rock stable so far.

A Gateway M/B in a Dell case?! I'm surprised there isn't any hardware conflicts....sorry
Lucky you took out the power supply, that's the era when Dell didn't use a standard atx pinout.
That said the power supply is good quality build and the motherboard will be a rock solid Intel board so as long as the 2 are used together you can make another decent retro PC out of it.

My case has a few battle scars, but its a fairly easy case to work in. Someone pointed out that the HDD is supposed to sit in that rack thing below the 3.5 drive bays, which I didn't know at the time but even still prefer them in the traditional location.

Correct about the hard drive. For now I'm going to leave it and somehow use the other hard drive area to mount an intake fan. Not that it really needs it as it isn't running hot but id rather use that space for something and a fan would be useful. I also decided to upgrade the main video card a bit from the MX and I managed to win a GeForce 4 ti4200 on eBay for $4.75 with free shipping, so I'm not complaining.

I think I'll keep win2k on here. I always liked it a bit better than 98 and have only come across a couple of games that will run on 95/98 and not 2k. I'm going to go through the pc100/133 ram I have and see how she runs with 256mb sticks. I've heard both 128 and 256 being the max per slot for this board, so we will find out.

As far as the old PSU and board, they both seem to work fine. So I'll definitely keep them together and as you said maybe use them for another build or as a backup in case my k6-3+ setup ever dies (or my old ibm aptiva 2156 k6-2 system that isn't in my signature as it doesn't allow any more characters!!). 😈
