My Slot A Athlon project. Going back to the Athlon's roots.

Specs:
ASUS K7M v1.04 (AMD 750 + VIA 686A)
Athlon 700 "K75 Pluto"
256MB Crucial PC133 CL2
3dfx Voodoo3
Diamond Monster Sound MX300 + DB50XG
Intel Pro 100M NIC
2x80 GB HDDs (one is for CD images)
DVD-ROM
Enlight 7237 ATX case
PC Power & Cooling TurboCool 300W
Windows 98SE

Notes:
The ASUS K7M uses almost entirely Rubycon caps so bad caps should not be a concern AFAIK.

AMD 751 (Irongate) has buggy AGP like old VIA/ALI boards. Some drivers force AGP 1x. Voodoo3/4/5 are surely the safest bet.

Stock 3dfx Voodoo2 drivers lock this board up during Windows login. You need to get the "Athlon compatible" Voodoo2 driver pack from FalconFly.de. These work perfectly.

AGP drivers are needed for 98SE but stock IDE is ok. WinME has stock AGP and IDE drivers.

If you disable USB and onboard audio (if you have that), you can get 3 PCI slots with no IRQ sharing.

This is a sort of final 1999 frontier for me. I've been wanting a Slot A box for a long time. I wanted to get the earliest Athlon hardware. I actually wanted to get the .25u Athlon "Argon", and I thought this 700 was one, until I looked up more of the part number (the 0.18u 700 has almost the same number).

Just for kicks, before the mobo+CPU arrived, I set up a K6-3+ @ 600 and did some Quake 3 gaming. The Athlon 700 is faster, indeed. 😉 Man what a bombshell AMD dropped on Intel's game that year.

That's a very nice and well thought out rig you have there Swaaye!
Can't even remember last time you actually posted a retro rig 😜

Only tip I could give is to add a system fan, but something tells me you already considered that ;D

And AMD did have some marketing (I remember seeing a clip about a train on youtube 🤣), but people were stupid. Even today many people who aren't computer savvy will go 😕 😕 😕 if I mention AMD. They think theres either Intel or something unknown.

I would love to get my hands on the 1 GHz Slot A Athlon with the gimpy 1/3 speed L2 but those are usually rare and expensive.

Regarding fan, I doubt I'll ever put the side of the case on anyway 🤣. I don't tend to keep hardware in a static config for long.

I remember this K6-2 commercial from the late 90s:

Of course, back then I didn't have a clue what AMD was, at least not until they released their K7 family. But nice marketing, I wonder how many fell for this trick.

So far I've tried a bunch of video cards in it. My particular Visiontek GeForce3 is a no go with corruption on boot. TNT2 and GeForce 256 seem 90% ok but sometimes I need to reboot to get a game going. Same with Radeon 7500. This is even with AGP automatically forced to 1x by the video drivers.

One particularly bizarre bug with the Radeon 7500 was with 3DMark2001. The lobby scene had the people consisting mostly of their eyeballs and down by their knee level there was a corrupted mess of the rest of the model. 😉

Voodoo3 and 5 work great though.

Gotta love the old buggy non-Intel AGP of the day.

Wasn't that what made those old AMD rigs such great 3dfx rigs?

😜

Anyway, a friend of mine used to have an Athlon 500 with a GF I think. Ran without too much problems.

ya the TNT2 and GF work for the most part like I said. But occasionally they freeze when loading a game. Maybe one time out of ten. I ran into this with Blood 2 and Xwing Alliance. Been playing those a bit.

Google Groups has of course a lot of complaints posted about AMD 750 and AGP cards. It sounds like AGP 2x mode is basically shot, hence drivers forcing 1x mode.

Just out of curiosity, what would this cpu overclock to? P3 700s/ 750s were known for being o'cing monsters, regularly hitting 933/1000mhz back in the day.

With a Goldfinger device the max was 1050mhz and even a 700mhz model could hit that easily with a voltage adjustment so it wasn't even worth buying a faster Athlon because the max multiplier was still the same regardless of which speed Athlon you attached it to. A 1ghz Athlon would still top out at 1050, so it really wasn't worth spending the extra money on one when you could the same performance from a much cheaper model.
