When I joined Vogons I had just bought a small Super Socket 7 Box with a mATX motherboard.
I bought this box because I wanted a Super Socket 7 DOS/Windows 98 gaming rig.
When things diddnt go as planned I started tinkering with a Compaq Deskpro motherboard and later the Leviathan build.

The thing that stopped the original plan for this box was a motherboard full of bad caps.
The solder points on this board is really really small so I diddnt feel like even trying to fix it.

Then I thought of using the case for something else but there were some problems.
The case uses a special small 112w PSU with weak rails. 3.3V 6A, 5V 10A and 12V 3A wont run many systems.
With not enough room for a larger PSU I had to make do with the (lack of) power the small PSU offered.

In some other thread I was told that playing Unreal using 800*600 resolution was like having sex with a cactus, possible but not desirable.
With my Voodoo 2 or the Banshee I use for my Socket 7 builds higher resolution is not possible or to slow so I thought that I might aswell build a fast voodoo 3 box for this purpose.
A fast voodoo 3 box that can run with the small PSU described above... quite the challenge!

Since the case is Micro ATX I needed a suitable Pentium 3 or Athlon board.
Since I dont think an Athlon of any kind would fit in the power envelope a Pentium 3 board seemed like the only choice.
The Pentium 3 CPU that needs the least amount of power is a Tualatin and the Tualatin that needs the least amount of power is a slow Celeron.
I found a QDI Legend Advance 6T board with a Tualatin Celeron 1100 on Tradera (Swedish Ebay). The price was ~10$ which seemed fair.

System spec

Motherboard: Qdi Legend Advance 6T
CPU: Tualatin Celeron 1100
Memory: 2x 512mb PC133 CAS2 SDRAM
GPU: PCI Voodoo 3 2000
Sound: The integrated sound on the motherboard.
HDD: Samsung 80gb
OS: Windows 2000

The end result is great
It plays Unreal (gold) at 1024*768 with high fps and that is really all I asked for.
Peak power is 100w at the socket but I think the PSU has really bad efficiency.

That's raw AC power draw from the wall. For the real DC power draw we must multiply that number by the PSU efficiency, which for such a venerable PSU should be 75% at best, so 100 x 0.75 = 75W real DC draw or less.

So as weird as it sounds that 112W PSU is overkill for a PIII system 😀 .

I know these hipro psu,s.
You might want to open the psu to check for bulged filter capacitors near the atx power cords, they can also be leaky.
If so replace them if you want your new hardware to keep in this world. 😀

Btw after reading your first post again this bad filtered lines from the psu might be the cause for the socket7 board to get problematic in the first place, really check out the psu or the new board can bsod you in some days onwards.
I would replace the caps on the socket7 board though

I guess I will have to open up that little sucker to see if there are some bad caps. Thanks for the heads-up.
I would recap the socket 7 board if the soldier pads were the normal size. They are so small that I dont think I would succeed.

I think I would manage with those expansion slots.
The board I replaced it with has exactly the same layout.

1x Voodoo Banshee or Voodoo 3 PCI
1x Soudblaster AWE64
1x PCI for other uses

With the P3 board the ISA slot wont be used but I might put a Soundblaster Audigy in one of the free PCI slots.

It is time for a follow up.

I have upgraded this box to a Celeron 1300, downgraded the HDD and installed Windows 98.
I did some benching with the new CPU and the Voodoo 3 2000.

New spec: Celeron 1300, Via Apollo Pro 133T, 512 mb SDRAM@133MHz CL2. Voodoo 3 2000, Some random ~17GB IDE drive, Windows 98SE.

First off is Super Pi. This is actually really bad, it gets beaten by a huge margin by the Coppermine Celeron 1100 on Intel 440 BX.

But wait I have not installed the chipset drivers, that must be the problem! ... No.

Sisoft Sandra 99. The memory scores are just awful.

In Unreal at 640*480 with the Voodoo 3 overclocked, the system is a bit bottlenecked by the CPU.
The overclocked Voodoo 3 scales much better than it should in Unreal at 1024*768. I do not know why but I have read that others also have experienced this.

Possibly because of Unreal's optimized glide implementation? Everything I've read about the game's development says glide was the major focus. I bet a comparison of it running other graphics APIs at those resolutions would shed some light.

Good build. I like the micro case too. I'd paint it, but I love the size and shape.

I only wished it had a little more powerful PSU.
I did the overclocked benching with another PSU that wont fit in the case just to be on the safe side.
