This computer is a reimagining of my third computer that I built during the mid 90's which was an upgrade from the 486DX2 80 that I had before it. It was the first computer that I built by myself and paid of all the parts. This computer is what I would have done if I had the money to do it. The computer I built back then was a Pentium Pro 166 with a cheap Acer motherboard, 32 mb of ram, 10g hard drive, 256k Trident video card, and SoundBlaster AWE32. Then Later upgraded to a Creative Labs PCI TNT, and SoundBlaster Live Value and 64 mb of ram.

I've wanted a Diamond Edge since see it in a Next Generation Mag. Ad and would have been my top chose for this build even though it not that great of a card. The Saturn controller ports were a big selling point to me. The OverDrive and the Voodoo would be more of a later upgrade that I would have been done to the system after those items came out. The CD drive, hard drive, zip drive, case are just items I had lying around and would most likely be different if I built this system in the mid 90's.

Spec:
Windows 95 2.5 OEM
Intel Venus VS440FX ATX Motherboard
Pentium II OverDrive 333 mhz
Diamond Edge 3D 3240 NV1 2mb PCI (with Sega Saturn Ports)
Diamond Monster 3D Voodoo1 4mb PCI
SoundBlaster AWE 64 Gold ISA
128 Meg Ram

Drives:
TOSHIBA XM-6102B CD-ROM
1.2 mb 5 1/4 Floppy Disk
1.44 mb 5 1/4 Floppy Disk
Iomega 250 IDE Zip
Maxtor 6L160P0 160GB IDE (Formatted to 120 gb)

Great build, all the components look well selected and kind of brutal, you can't deny it 😀 That is quite a unique computer, haven't seen PII Overdrive here on Vogons before.

You must have spent a lot of money on it, given the rarity of NV1, Overdrive CPU and the value of AWE 64 Gold. 32MB RAM sticks are also not easy to come across.

May I suggest you enter Phil's Ultimate VGA Benchmark Database Project?

Back in the mid to late 90's I would have picked Pentium Pro over Pentium II any day of the week and the Overdrive was to me the ultimate CPU until the K6-III came out. Guess I like a lot of on board cache.

Not sure what other people spend on building older systems but my build breaks down to about...
The NV1 with 3 games (Panzer Dragoon, NASCAR, Descent) $65
Voodoo $15
Motherboard with ram $30
AWE 64 Gold $20
Pentium II Overdrive $65
Case,Drives,PSU $55

So about $250 or so.

That's quite a lot, but I suppose, most of it are good deals. I expected the total summ to be around $350 😀

So do you have any specific games in mind?
