I think I have settled on my go-to late-DOS / Win98SE machine. I have been trying to decide between an Intel SE440BX-2 with a Tualeron 1300MHz and a Soyo K7VTA Pro with an Athlon XP 2400+. I have finished my bench testing on the latter and have chosen it.

I really like the stability of the Intel platform (especially when I am using a 1000MHz Slot 1 P3 instead of the Powerleap Tualeron), but the Soyo and its VIA drivers have been surprisingly stable after testing with Quake, Duke 3D, Quake 2, Unreal Gold, UT99, and Deus Ex. I tested with a Geforce 4 Ti4600 and a Voodoo 3 3500. The only program that crashes is SiSoft Sandra 99, but I assume that it has problems with the newer VIA chipset. Also, weird things happen when I use 512MB of CAS2 PC133 SDRAM, so I stuck with 256MB.

Also, I like what the Athlon 2400+ turns into with this system when you disable its internal cache: a 486DX2-66. This is a perfect speed for Epic games such as One Must Fall, Jazz, Epic Pinball, and Tyrian. Speedsys gives it a score of 26.61.

I am using the heatsink/fan combo that came with a retail Sempron, and it is quiet. Even with the Soyo fan over the chipset, the system is a LOT quieter than the Intel board. The fan on the 1000MHz P3 is loud, and the Powerleap fan on the Tualeron is very loud.

So there you have it:

SOYO K7VTA PRO 1.0 (4-in-1 4.43v)
AMD ATHLON XP 2400+
256MB CAS2 PC133 SDRAM
GEFORCE 4 TI4600 OR 3DFX VOODOO 3 3500
AUREAL VORTEX 2
SB AWE64 GOLD
ANTEC TRUE POWER 480 PS (NOT SHOWN)

I'm toying with the idea of using a GUS and relying on the Vortex's SB Pro emulation for games that don't support the GUS natively, but I think this setup is better. There's always SoftMPU and the MT-32 too.

I've got a brand new beige Antec case for it that the Seattle is occupying right now, so the Seattle will be a bench board for now.

Very nice! Packing lots of CPU power that;s for sure. This machine begs to receive a V5 🤣

I've got a V5 but was nervous about using it with this board. I used it only with the Seattle because I knew it would be safe. I'll probably relent...

Hmm, this does look remarkably versatile. Would you throw in some 3dmark01 numbers too?

Actually, I know how you feel. I usually just use a V3 and the V5 stays tucked away 😊

I don't own a V5, but if I did, I don't think I would use it as a daily driver. They seem kind of fragile (i.e. short lifespan).

Sure, here you go. I used the Ti4600 with 45.23 drivers. 8933 3DMarks.

Would going to 512MB memory make any difference in the score?

Nice! I think you'd be safely over 10k if you added a WinXP partition.

I'd like to keep this a Win98SE ship, despite my less-than period-correct hardware and DX8. I think everything I have was available within a year of the official release of XP (released 8/2002, the 2400+ Thoroughbred was the most recent component), so this would be my "Windows XP? I'm happy with 98SE" build. 😀

I seem to remember that when I upgraded in 2000 to a AMD Duron 650@900 that my old SB16 couldn't keep up in Windows games, I got a lot of stuttering,
which is why I went across to a SBLIVE at the time.
I still have that machine and You can successfully use the ISA bus sound card in Dos with a floppy boot, and use the PCI sound card in Win98se. In my case
Windows doesn't even pick up that there is a ISA sound card there as it isn't Plug and Play, and causes no conflicts.

The SB16 is about to go to a Dos build that I am acquiring parts for, the AMD Athlon 1200MP as it is now will become primarily a Windows 98 machine, but I'll still use it
for Dos games that require Pentium performance levels.

Actually could you expand on what you mean by safe?

A little paranoia on my part. Because the part is rare, I don't want to risk putting it in an AGP slot that MIGHT not be 3.3v, even though the slots are keyed so that incompatible cards won't physically fit. I think I read some kind of warning on the falconfly.de site that made me extra wary, especially on non-P2/P3 boards like the Soyo. I knew that the SE440BX-2 would be compatible.

Warning

All Banshee, Voodoo3 and Voodoo5 AGP Cards are 2xAGP 3.3V only!
Do not use in modern 4x/8x AGP 1.5V only Motherboards!
Failure to comply can cause damage to both the Card and the Motherboard!
Consult your Motherboard manual for 2xAGP 3.3V support before use!

Only the retail 3dfx built Voodoo4 4500 AGP is 4xAGP 1.5V capable.
(the Powercolor Evilking Voodoo4 and the rare 3dfx Voodoo4 4500 "L" Shaped variants are confirmed to be 2xAGP 3.3V only)

I'm just trying to follow along. So... is the worry that your Soyo has an unkeyed universal slot, and that /might/ have just been laziness on Soyo's part and it's really a 1.5-only?

They don't exactly say in the manual, though they say 1x/2x/4x so wouldn't it have to be true universal?

Love that Soyo manual:

No, just irrational jitters. As I said, I'll probably relent once I know that the V5 is working as it should. It was my first time testing the card, so I didn't want any motherboard problems to make me think there was an issue with the card.

I got a couple of new video cards and benched them with 3DMark01. The results are somewhat surprising to me.
