So I finally got the RAM upgrade for my old 386SX - It had 1 Mb RAM via 44256 chips (which went to my 386 VLB's video card, now at 2Mb) and now it has 4Mb via 36 41000 chips. It went almost flawlessly - I bent a pin on the very first chip, giving me a RAM count of 196Kb, lots of beeps, and a 0000:0002 Parity Error in CGA style fonts - after the bent pin was found and restored, I had 4096 K of RAM. It was very satisfying to put the chips in individually like that, and the anticipation of the RAM count (I had no idea if it would stop at 3712 K or do the full count) had me feeling like I was 10-11 again after having completed my first upgrade, also on a 386SX (20 though, and a Compaq system). My fingers hurt for a few hours from manipulating the chips, as at times, inserting them into the board required considerable but careful force. It was a good type of pain, analogous to "Nintendo thumb".

The video card upgrade went a lot smoother (only 8 chips to put in) and I got 512K working straight away. Finding drivers that worked with that card for Windows 3.0 and subsequently installing them was a bit of a trick. I got them from here actually, in the drivers section. The driver files would be identified in DOS's Windows Setup, but each time I selected them, it said there was a copy problem and the option for that driver disappeared from the menu. Upon further investigation, the driver file would show 0 bytes in DOS. Eventually I just stuck the drivers into the system subdirectory and pointed to them manually using SYSTEM.INI - It worked. I don't think I've ever had Windows 3.0 in 256 colors, and now it even runs in enhanced mode. Hurray!

I am waiting on 30 pin SIPPs to add another megabyte of RAM (according to the manual, it will run in Interleaved mode using this configuration) and an 85Mb hard disk which will either replace or compliment the 42Mb one in there, as I have about 8Mb free - This totally brings me back to space management as a kid hah.

Here's the pics (sorry about some blurriness, I had a few rums on the rocks along the way):

(The order is messed up because imgur never lets me down when it comes to randomizing and dropping files - Never understood why the die-hards over on Reddit praise this service so much - it sucks really.)

Anyone know where I can get an NPU of this type? It would help with Scorched Earth...

The fpu should be readily available on ebay. Check for intel 387sx, IIT 3C87SX/XC87SlC, ULSI Math Co US3C87 or Cyrix Fasmath 83s87.

I have a few lying around, but they're all ones with PINs, not the socket type here. Nothing on Polish eBay either (allegro.pl).

*edit Thank you!! I am now waiting 4-6 weeks for an NPU to come from China (I bought the Intel type) - good price too!

Came in tonight - Thanks, Anonymous Coward!!

Now just waiting for that extra megabyte worth of SIPPS to come in, and an 80 MB hard disk.

Missed my chance at a $25 8 bit soundblaster this morning, which would round out this system quite well.

Scorched Earth does seem to play noticeably faster though!

Wow! This is a real retro system... and in very good condition too! I like the old ATi cards... I even think some of their earlier cards were graphics co-processors rather than standalone.

That is a serious amount of DIL sockets for a 386 board... are you populating all of them?

Not seen SIPP's in ages... what speed are they out of interest? *The overclocker in me asks*

I did receive the SIP RAM finally, but the BIOS will only see them (1024K) OR the 4Mb installed on board - It will not work, even though the manual states that it will work with 2 banks of 256K RAM: When the jumper to invert banks 1 and 0 to 2 and 3 (for SIP use, as per manual) it just turns on to a blank screen. If I put the jumper back to bank 0 and 1 as primary (DIP banks) it beeps at me. If I remove (all...) the 41000 chips, it will POST with the SIP memory. Really, without the Quickset software, I can't seem to make it work, even though I manually set the type of RAM in BIOS, as well as the interleave. Oh well, 4Mb is PLENTY of RAM for this system, and I know I have some SIPs that work.

Either way, my 85MB hard disk didn't come in, but a 420, 850, and a 340MB came in from auction, all in rather terrible shape. The 850 spins up then stops, the 420 is riddled with bad sectors and noisy, and the 340 had to have a pin resoldered (see pics) as well as the jumper block repaired. It will work as a slave only, and even then has a few bad sectors and behaves oddly (during NDD, it will slow down to a crawl at regular intervals, only to wake up again) - I plopped this drive into the 386 for now, put Windows 3.1 and WPWIN 6.1 on it (so far so good) and a few games to free up my 40 MB in anticipation that one day it will get an era-correct secondary. I also put in an OPTI soundcard (919 I think, can't check, system is installing WPWIN from diskettes as I type this) but one day I will put in a Soundblaster 8 bit - I missed my chance at an auction for one for $25! This doesn't really lend the system to period-correct, but it does work for now.

In this picture, I soldered a diode in line to both drives' activity light, so the current only flows towards the LED and not into the other drive - Both have diodes in line and I made it modular so when I replace the 340 with a more appropriate drive, it'll be plug and play.

This is the connector on the ST-157A, I used an old power LED motherboard connector for the jack:

Here's the MOBO with all the RAM installed - Two SIPs are Samsung 80NS, the other two are Goldstar, also 80NS

This is the NEC 340Mb drive after some surgery - One pin was broken off, so I cut the plastic down (luckily it was on the top row) carefully and soldered a diode leg to it - Presto! You can also see an orange wire soldered onto the jumper block there, that was broken off.

Here it is alongside my other computers (an ever problematic Cx486 - Top left, to the right a nice clean P166 (I'll make a post about it separately), bottom right is my P4 NAS, and beside that my VLB 386DX40) - All of the others get switched through a KVM. The tetris-like arrangement is due to the fact that my wife needed a desk to study on, and this kind of works. The 386SX gets its own monitor, keyboard and mouse, partially because it all came as a kit (with the Raven 24 pin printer below it!), and partially because the LCD monitors I have don't like the VGA Wonder signals, and also the mouse is a bus mouse - No way to route that through a KVM. I also have a PPRO200 (Dell) not shown, and a 486DX2/66 still in Poland waiting to be flown in and thoroughly rebuilt.
