I spent way too much money on ebay to get a CUBX-E to replace a CUBX that died last year.

Specs:
Asus CUBX-E
Powerleap Adaptor PL-Neo/T
Intel Pentium 3-S 1.4
2 x 256MB PC133 SD-RAM
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP Geforce 6800XT 128MB
64GB Compactflash 128GB Compactflash
Soundblaster AWE64
Startech USB 2.0 Card
LG DVD/RW
LG DVD-ROM
3.5 Floppy

Up and running nicely in 98SE right now, tomorrow I'm going to play around with the CPU clockspeed a bit. I have 3 Celeron 1.2 processors, it would be nice to get one to work at 1.6 (133fsb) but who knows if that'll work (none did in via based boards). I also have a 1.4 P3 if none of those Celerons will do my desired 1.6.

I'm reusing the case, CPU cooler, powersupply, drives and powerleap pl-neo/t from this old build of mine - CUV4X - Powerleap Tualatin Build I was not satisfied with those VIA boards and just felt the need to get back to the venerable 440BX.

I've never seen that BIOS before. It's funny to me that it identifies the CPU as a "Tualeron(TM)".

I have the parts for a VIA 694T machine (1 ISA slot) similar to this, and a couple Celeron 1.2GHz that I've tested working at 1.6GHz (got lucky on those), but never actually built the machine for reals. I guess I'll find out if I end up liking it or not.
Did you previously find out if your Voodoo3 is going to be happy at 89MHz?
I love the 440BX, but never tried pushing one to run Tualatins. It's an appealing idea.

Looking at your pictures, I'm suspicious that it might have been partially recapped, perhaps leaving behind some caps that should have been pulled. It looks like you have some Rubycons (which might be replacements) sitting next to caps of the same size with the more common "+" vent, which could be anything (I can't see the brand). The OSTs near the KB connector are not good caps, but in that location they're unlikely to fail. The caps around the CPU and at the power input are usually the ones to worry about the most.

I definitely smiled when I saw "Tualeron" on startup.

I've used that V3 on 75mhz agp with no issue, haven't had a chance to test anything higher yet.

As for the caps on the board, it looks identical to any pics of a CUBX-E I can find online.

Been running various benchmarks, 3dmark 99, 2000, Quake 3 and it's rock stable with the P3 1.4 and 89mhz agp speed so far. I figured I'd start with the P3 because I know that it's 100% stable at stock speed instead of an overclocked CPU to have one less variable.

You just had to have the ISA sound card, didn't you 😀

Of course! 😀 Somehow I've ended up with 3 Soundblaster AWE64 cards so I better start putting them to use!

Celeron overlocking = GREAT SUCCESS

The first 1.2 Celeron I put in this board is running nicely at 1600mhz with a voltage bump to 1.7v. Tomorrow I'll likely test the other two and see what happens. In my VIA based socket 370 boards this CPU will post at 1600mhz but the keyboard input stops working after a few seconds.

Also just out of curiosity I've been testing some nvidia cards in here, my 5900XT crashes a lot with 89mhz agp but so far my 6800XT seems to be working fine.

This weekend I think I'm going to use the 6800XT to do some benchmarks of Celeron 1.6 vs P3 1.4.

Synthetic benchmarks:

Voodoo 3
3dmark 99
6790 - 1.4ghz Pentium 3
6790 - 1.6ghz Celeron

3dmark 2000
3266 - 1.2ghz Celeron
3414 - 1.4ghz Pentium 3
3416 - 1.6ghz Celeron

6800XT
Aquamark
27700 - 1.4ghz Pentium 3

3dmark 99
8209 - 1.2ghz Celeron (16883 - CPU Marks)
10860- 1.4ghz Pentium 3 (21770 - CPU Marks)
10129- 1.6ghz Celeron (21232 - CPU Marks)

3dmark 2000
7155 - 1.2ghz Celeron (457 - CPU Marks)
9903 - 1.4ghz Pentium 3 (595 - CPU Marks)
8895 - 1.6ghz Celeron (572 - CPU Marks)

3dmark 2001SE
7742 - 1.2ghz Celeron
9701 - 1.4ghz Pentium 3
9443 - 1.6ghz Celeron

So it seems the P3 is definitely faster than the Celeron and I don't have to give a bunch of extra voltage so I think I'm going to go with that CPU in this machine.

Super satisfied with this build, it really ticks all the nostalgia boxes for me.

Attached is a pic of the final build. I'm going to be using the Voodoo 3 3000 as it's day to day graphics card.

Replaced the chipset cooler today, the original green one is a bit smaller and had no thermal paste under it.

EDIT:

I've also switched over to using the Geforce 6800XT with nglide for NFS2 and whatever other glide games I can find.

The V3 just isn't fast enough when I run something like UT.

As a result you can say PIII-S cpu is faster...

But with 22% - 24% speed increase in your 3d mark benches, it is very result 😀

I have also a tualeron, but the smallest one, the 1000A.
I have a clock range of 667MHz to 1.4GHz. Higher than 140 fsb i would not go...

#1 K6-2/500, #2 Athlon1200, #3 Celeron1000A, #4 A64-3700, #5 P4HT-3200, #6 P4-2800, #7 Am486DX2-66

Yes a good result for sure, I thought the extra 200mhz would help the Celeron a bit but that extra cache on the P3-S seems to make a big difference.

Upgraded the storage today, with all the old games I've installed lately I was down to about 2gb free!

The bonus is this new 128GB compactflash card is faster too, games load VERY quickly now.

Also I found a decent Pentium 3 wallpaper I've been using and I've attached that too.
