I did pick up a modern PSU that has a 20+4Pin main connector. The board has a 20 pin. Can I presumably just leave off the 4pin part and it should work fine with no adapter needed?

Believe so, yeah. Even the startech 24->20pin adapters I use just leave those last 4 connected to nothing (and I only need those because my EVGA units are 24-pin and not 20+4pin, plus my boards like to put stuff around the ATX power input).

I got a couple of PSUs with the non detachable extra 4, and I just use them on boards with room to hang them over the edge of the 20 pin.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.
