Just wanted to show off my retro pc gaming project I worked on for a long time.

Goal was to make a pc that could run all the games from when I was young (I still am 😛), age 5-15 (till the end of 2000). There are about 200+ games I've played in that period, and I installed each and every on of them. Games range from 1982 till 2000.

Dreamblaster S2
Big internal pc speaker 0.5 Watt
Crucial MX500 250GB SSD
Delock IDE sata converter
Corsair RM750X
3x Cooltek Silent 120mm
2x Cooltek Silent 140mm

Sharkoon M25-V
New Old Stock CD Drive
New Old Stock Floppy Drive
Fan Splitter
Round IDE and Round Floppy cable

Installed literally every game I played from age 5-15.

At first I also had a Voodoo5 5500 and a Voodoo2 12 mb. The voodoo5 5500 broke, luckily, otherwise I would have never found out that the voodoo3 3000 was way more perfect for my needs. It runs all my games flawlessly, and even the dos games in 3DFX (except Champions League 96-97). I auctioned the Voodoo5 5500 on Ebay for 250 euro (can you believe that? bought it for the same price 2,5 years back) and I'm still trying to sell the voodoo2.

I also had an audigy 2zs in it at first, but that thing caused nothing but problems and it was a pain in the ass with the audio splitter. I also don't hear the difference between that one and the Isa card I have in it.

I made a real fridge out of the pc. The Cooltek Silent has really good airflow. When I had the Voodoo5 still in it, the cpu was idle 32 degrees celcius, and the system 28. Now, the cpu (a Tualatin!) is 24 degrees celsius idle, and the system 19 degrees celsius (see picture)! After it has been on for 2 hours it's cpu 26 and system 21. The components where in a closed retro case before this, with really bad airflow, and the cpu was 62 degrees idle.

Only 2 games didn't work. Ark of Time (gpu too new, some Vesa problem), and South Park, for some strange reason. (edit: South Park works now, it was just copy protection, needed a patch).

Well, hope you like it 🙂

Thanks for the knowledge you guys provided and big thanks to the SETYMF tiido guy for the Yamaha card driver. Program saved my ass 😁.

Very Nice!

Just a bit of a heads up with your 250GB SSD, make sure to install rloew's PATCH137 or PATCH1TB so you don't encounter wrap-around corruption past the 137GB barrier and lose everything on the drive.

I made a Partion in windows 98 that gives me a 128 GB harddisk. I will never have more on that disk. Do you think it's still necessary to install it?

I believe so yeah, Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken, it's something to do with how win98 handles drives larger than 137GB is broken and needs patching, I recall XP RTM had a similar issue that wasn't fixed until XP SP1.
Microsoft never released an official patch for win98 though, so we have to use rloew's - you can find it here link: https://rloewelectronics.com/distribute/TBPLUS/3.0/PATCH/

That QDI Advance 10T board is so neat, supporting the fastest Tualatin but also has an ISA slot. When I was building my Tualatin system, I originally wanted to go with the Advance 10T but bought 2 bad ones in a row, gave up and bought a TUSL2-C. So I ended up having to build another slot 1 rig with ISA for pure DOS stuff. I ain't mad, but so nice to see a rig that has the best of both worlds. 😀

"The voodoo5 5500 broke, luckily"
I don't think anyone else has said, ever! 🤣

I like the nice simple case design and as you said the cooling is so much better then ones from 20 years ago.
I'd still want EAX support but if it's hassle free your after then just the Yamaha card is fine, plenty of motherboards used similar YMF for onboard sound during this time.

Dayum that's one hell of a tualatin monster, would you entertain a fellow nerd?
Can you try and run deus ex (latest) on that PC at max detail at 1024x768? i'm not fully satisfied with the performances of my own PIII system regarding deus ex and since i'm planning to add an MX300 in it as a companion piece to the SB i want to check if i need to upgrade something.

I'm afraid that is a bit too much for the V3-3000.

Tiemen, your system is so fine, greets! I am totally with you that if there is an ISA slot forget the Audigy just use it.

Now playing: Red Faction on 2003 Acrylic build

Yeah max details @ 1024x768 is the issue, might handle it at 800x600 however.

I remember running this game at 1024x768 with max details on a Voodoo2 SLI setup back in the day and it ran it beautifully using GLIDE.

Agreed. I recently replayed Deus Ex on an AthlonXP 1700+ and a Voodoo 3 2000 and it ran pretty good at 800x600. I was getting 60+ FPS indoors and 40-50 FPS in large, outdoor areas.

One thing to note is that the first level (Liberty Island) is the most demanding map of them all. Literally every other level in game will have better frame rates.

PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

I would have thought the V3-3k was on par with a Voodoo2 SLI setup but I guess it doesn't quite have the grunt. I guess it does demonstrate just how powerful the 12Mb Voodoo2 actually was back in the day and how much it scared the likes of ATI and nVidia into stepping up their game. That said . .the TnT was one hell of a card and really stuck it to 3DFX, sad they never had a chance to reply with the Rampage core.

I was curious mostly for the CPU, truth is that my GeForce 3 system has something like 25fps in large areas, i think a voodoo 3 can run the game pretty well with a strong CPU like the best tualatin or a P4/athlon XP.

I can tell you that I get 60+ FPS on Liberty Island at 1280x1024 with an Athlon64 3400+ paired with a GeForce FX 5900XT.

Certain outdoor maps in Deus Ex are very demanding on the CPU.
