Just finished experimenting with the ASRock ALiveSATA2-GLAN motherboard (AM2) as a DOS/98/XP machine. With the beta BIOS, I was able to get an AM3 Athlon II X2 280 working flawlessly. The beta BIOS's were hard to find so I've uploaded them to the Internet Archive for those interested: https://archive.org/details/asrock-alivesata2-glan-beta-bios

Specs

  • ASRock ALiveSATA2-GLAN (beta BIOS 2.617)
  • AMD Athlon II X2 280 (3.6ghz, 45nm)
  • Noctua NH-U9S (w/ AM2 mounting kit)
  • 4x1GB G.Skill DDr2 PC2-8500
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
  • Voodoo 5 5500 PCI
  • Audigy 2 ZS
  • Terratec SOLO1-S (ESS ES1938S, SOLO-1) (chip rrevision G398)

DOS/98

  • ESS SOLO-1 works flawlessly in TDMA mode in DOS thanks to the motherboard's VIA chipset
  • onboard gigabit NIC works without issue
  • Voodoo 5 5500 works without graphical artifacts common to the PCI variants of the card (ex. artifacts in the Unreal menus, horizontal banding in some DOS games like Duke Nukem 3D) (related Voodoo 3/5 PCI Post Write Artifacts)
  • I didn't test the onboard SATA or SATA2 in DOS/98. I used an IDE-to-SATA adapter instead

XP

  • onboard gigabit NIC works without issue
  • onboard SATA2 controller works with a modern Samsung EVO 870 SSD (1TB)
  • the GTX 560 Ti was as fast as I expected it be

Overall, a solid build that runs fast and cool thanks to the 45nm CPU. That said, I'm no longer using this build due to the Voodoo 5 5500 not being as fast as I'd like with some 98 games.
