I've enabled G4 support on this machine, as I may look at fitting a SONNET G4 upgrade in the future! I just want to get all of the expansion cards and drives sorted out before I do so!

One of these 1GHz G4 CPU's would go a long way to finish this machine off!

That is a seriously cool machine. I personally would go with OS X on it, as the BSD Unix subsystem is such a goodie (if you are into the UNIX/Linux command line thing, which I am).

I have an iBook G4, and I ration my usage of it like it was a hard drug!

To keep things interesting, rather than go the SSD route, I'll look at plugging one of these drives into the SONNET SATA "SCSI" card:

s-l1600-298.jpg

s-l1600-297.jpg

Either of these drives will saturate this card and give you the best drive performance possible in this system , speed-wise anyway. (I am aware that the seek time on an SSD would be far superior.)

Mechanical drives such as these are just more fun in my opinion!

Is that the limited edition Raptor, that came with a transparent case from the factory or is it custom made?

Please use the "quote" option if asking questions to what I write - it will really up the chances of me noticing 😀

I'm busy getting all the bits together to do an OS X Tiger install! 😀

I've removed all of the mechanical drives and have installed an SSD, onto which I've installed MacOS X 10.4.11 Tiger.

I had 1GB of PC133 RAM installed, but the system didn't like the RAM and was unstable as a result, so I'm back to 384MB of PC100 RAM for now! 🙁 (I'll have to order in 1GB of matched PC100 RAM)

This is what the system currently looks like inside: (The Radion 9200LE and the ATTO SCSI U320 card are still on their way from the US!)

I will install the ATTO Ultra 320 card when I get it, as there are OS X drivers for it, So the system will be getting a 15KRPM SCSI drive.

I would still also like to install a Raptor drive on the secondary SATA channel.

Here are some current benchmark results:

Even with 384MB of RAM, the system is still choking running MacOS X 10.4.11, but there is a small improvement moving from 256 to 384MB of RAM

Nice! I have a G4 Quicksilver with a 2ghz G4 😀 Love that machine.

Can I recommend something? Dual boot with OS9. Running classic Mac OS at these speeds is lovely. There is also some cool software you can use, in particular DAW type stuff. Games are also interesting. I find I use mine in OS9 mode more than OSX!
