I'm sure this sounds completely ridiculous, but I had someone say to me "just copy the game's exe file on top of the dosbox exe file" to run it. I haven't tried it - is it possible?

Same thing as dragging it onto the shortcut. DosBox reads the source path and uses that.
It's highly recommended not to use this though unless you know for sure that the games don't need any special tweaking or mount options.
