Having trouble getting games to run in full screen view; will look fine until a few seconds in, or a mouse click, and the colours get distorted.

Tried playing around with various .conf settings for the resolution, screen, and output kind, along with closing programs and tasks in the taskbar, to no avail. Can't seem to work out what is causing this.

This is a long shot but try fulldouble=false and/or aspect=false. Those two don't play nice with my Thinkpad's SuperSavage video controller (on Windows) for example.

You could give some more info, too. "Laptop" is not a very precise description of your system.

Windows XP, 1.8 GHz AMD Athlon Dual Core processor, 512MB RAM, ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 graphics card.

Tried the false suggestions, but no luck there. Can anybody put me out of my misery? Driving me crazy that I can't play full screen.
