I have an issue with 0.73 with the number of files and directories returned when i do a dir command.
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit on an AMD chipset.
When I cd to c:\windows\system32\drivers from a cmd prompt I can see many files and a directory called etc.
When I have mount my c drive from dosbox and cd to the same area there is no etc directory and half the files are missing.

Any ideas?

All I want to do is use dosbox to edit files from within a dosbox and edit has disappeared from 64bit versions of vista. Can you name a product I can use

This is windows fault. system32 is not the same directory when viewed from explorer or 32-bit application. When running 32-bit application (like dosbox), c:\windows\system32 will actually be redirected to c:\windows\SysWow64.
DOSBox is not a tool to edit your windows files or browse through your c: disk.
