I can't get control-c to break out of a program. I get a heart character instead . How do I get CTRL-C to work the same way it does in DOS and dosemu?

by booting msdos in dosbox.

There was this small chance with the other key combination (XT keyboard)

Try Control-ScrLk. That works in some programs.
