I am not a DOS gamer, but I had some old DOS genealogy programs that I thought I would never be able to use again since I had to replace my laptop which was Windows XP Pro with a new laptop that came with Windows 7 64-bit.

I was able to drag and drop a DOS program that was a self-contained program with data into D-Fend Reloaded and it works. So thank you very much for making this program available.

I have another program that would created either an Ancestor or Descendant book from a genealogy database. While I am able to drag and drop this program to D-Fend Reloaded and get it to launch, I need to know how I can get it to read the genealogy database which was also created by another DOS program.

The program I am trying to get running is GenBook.exe http://www.foothill.net/~genbook/ which under Windows XP was installed in C:\GenBook as genbook.exe and read the database that was in C:\PAF\Data\Indiv2.dat

So my question is how do I get D-Fend Reloaded to run Genbook.exe (a DOS program) and have it find my DOS genealogy database. I get it to display the first 2 screens in execution, but then it returns that it cannot find the database in C:\PAF\Data\Indiv2.dat

Do I need to move my database to a different location?

If so, how do I specify where it is?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ken

[Thread moved to DOSBox General Section]

And by the way... no pun intended but JPEG is BAD for capturing screens. Use PNG instead.

looks like the configuration file is read oddly.
doesn't seem like it has to do something with specificly d-fend Reloaded

try adding C:\PAF\Data to the path section of autoexec.bat

Thanks for the replies,

Here is what I ended up doing to get both the PAF 2.3 and GenBook programs to work:

  • * Copied the C:\PAF directory structure to C:\Users\username\D-Fend Reloaded\VirtualHD\PAF
    * Copied the C:\Genbook directory structure to C:\Users\username\D-Fend Reloaded\VirtualHD\GenBook

So it is possible that I did not setup PAF and Genbook correctly in the first place.
