if you are about alt-tab fullscreen, don't use alt-tab from fullscreen, alt-enter is for that

Is the machine type set to vgaonly by any chance?

Back in the good old DOS days and now too: if you fear messing something up when altering a file...just make a copy to be safe, if you screw it, just go back to your saved copy?
