Are there any ways that a booted image can communicate with the outside world? AFAIK, there is no cd-rom, no USB whatsoever.

No never. Booted images are typically floppy images with alley cat or king's quest...

Though Hal's Megabuild can use native IPX and with appropriate setup of your LAN and ports you can IPX your way out of Windows 95. I've done that.
