My brother works with an old accounting program which runs under ms-dos. It is called Grote Beer (a Dutch program). In Windows it runs in a DOS-prompt up to Windows-98. Understandably he experiences increasing trouble to keep a computer running that is able to run under Windows-98.
(He is shortly before reaching his pension, and the same goes for his accountant, so they want to keep it going for a few more years).

I tried to run it in command-prompt environment as provided by Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. All came with the message that "not enough filehandles" where available. If I remember correctly it needs 125 of those.

I understand that this is out of context as this is gaming-oriented and do not expect complete support. I am curious if it might work for this type of programs. Generally spoken, would there be any chance to get it to work in Dos-box? Apart from the large amount of "file handles" is needs to be able to print (invoices, accounting stuff).

Kind regards,
Johan
