Hi. I'm trying to run Grand Theft Auto (freeware version downloaded from the official Rockstar Games page) on Linux Mint using Dosbox and I've read on the games list that it works under Dosbox, but when I try to run the .exe I get the message "This program can not be run in DOS mode". I've tried by reading all "howto"s I've found... nothing. I hope you can help me. Thank you in advance!

They were probably talking about the DOS executables in the game (not exactly sure anymore the directory/file structure of the game).
What I would suggest you to try instead is Wine, it'll work faster and less taxing on your system than emulating with DosBox.

Also, Windows games cannot be run under DosBox or DOS.

Windows 95 games and higher cannot be played in Dosbox (though you can but it is not supported and isn't as pain free as Wine). Windows 3.x games can be played in Dosbox when you install Windows 3.x in Dosbox 😉

Thank you both. I've tried to run it under Wine, but didn't manage to do it... but this is off-topic.

Then... if GTA can't run on dosbox, I just don't understand what they mean by "supported" on this list: http://www.dosbox.com/comp_list.php?showID=1783&letter=G

Thank you again, anyway! 😀

As I said, you can run the game in DosBox, just run the Dos binary inside the DOS sub-folder ( I don't remember exactly where it was though, might be wrong)

That's because original GTA and London expansion were both DOS games (and supported Glide, BTW). When Rockstar released it as freeware they recompiled GTA to work with modern machines (and in GTA it means moving from DOS to Windows).

But, if you're able to get an original GTA disc (hey, I've got one of those!) it can be played with DOSBox. If you're using the freeware release, you'd better use it with wine.

If it was, then it would be called WinBox. 🤣

Say, I think that would be a great idea for a program. I know, there's already WINE, but I was just thinking it would be cool if there was a sort of pseudo-vm like DosBox specifically designed for playing old Windows games.

As Dominus says, you can install Windows 3.1 in DOSBox.

Yes, it would be nice if there was some wonderful open-source thing that required minimal configuration and could start running 16-bit Windows programs in minutes, and I might imagine much of the heavy lifting has been done by the WINE development crew already. Presumably trying to reverse-engineer all the little behind-the-scenes kludges that make Windows 3.1 work is just that difficult. (See http://www.os2museum.com/wp/?p=935 for example, or the famous AARD code.)

Don't know if it will play games (though I think it should) but it sounds interesting/promising in the future:

That's a killer idea! A virtual Win9x would solve lots of issues. And perhaps adding an older virtual D3D card choices like S3 Virge or Rendition Verite for specific titles (I want to play Destruction Derby and Terminal Velocity for S3 Virge and SODA for Rendition Verite so bad!).

The DOSBox Java port author, danoon, was/is experimenting with WINE in his port. He has working demos of Caesar III and Full Tilt! Pinball running in it.

Java Port

This could be the beginning of a WinBox.

Wine, pain free? It's all relative I suppose! 😜

This is exactly what I'm talking about. 😁

Getting Wine ready for a 32bit game is much less hassle than getting Windows 95 games to run in Dosbox. For me at least....

Wine is less of a hassle, you're right, but it's definitely not effortless. Really, the hardest part of setting up WINE is setting up a Linux install to properly run games in the first place.
