I've been trying to run a game in Compatibility mode but my laptop says it can't, a friend told me about DOSBox so I thought I would try that but I can't seem to understand where I start, can anyone give me a simple run down of what exactly I do, I'm also not very good at this stuff so keep it very basic.

I've tried following the guide on here but it makes no sense to me.

DOSBox unofficially supports Windows 9x and then its games. Not the best solution, but better than some.
Win 3x games are not officially supported too, but they are discussed.

Currently:
DosBox supports Windows 3.x.
DOSBox does not support Windows 9x in SVN. You can get it barely working but it's not worth it. Unofficial patches are the only way to get it working stable.

So... we bump this thread back to Windows and ask the OP to run it natively?
