With the type command, if a file has a <Ctrl-Z>, DOSBox will display that as well (as a left arrow) on my system. This was also the case with 0.63.

I am pretty sure ms-dos itself did the same thing with some files.

No, but the dosbox type isn't intended to be msdos type identical.
It's used to check file contents, even beyond eof markers (^Z)
thus it'll display special characters as chars and not interpret them
(at least some).

Not that I ever saw. I have been using the batch file with the type command for years. What it does is display a file that contains the ANSI codes for displaying the command prompt at the bottom of the screen. It has never displayed the EOF on any MS-DOS system or window that I have used it on.
