@MiniMax: Thanks for the help and suggestions. I'll update the startup batchfile for the next release to something like yours. You are also very right about database exception handling, it needs some work in order to forward the error messages towards the GUI.
@MaReaDo: For Windows, you can set your path as follows.
Press Start - Control Panel - System - Advanced tab - Environment Variables - in system variables list select path and press edit. Make sure it contains the string (assuming you installed the JRE to the default location):
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin;
