For anybody who gets a "failed to create a rendering output" when they try to play a game or open dos box, try to change the screen resolution and refresh rate..it worked for me.

This error is related to old Ati Cards (Rage for example), it seems that high refresh rates (100, 120 ) don't go with Dos Box.
I changed mine to 85 hz and 1024x768 and now it works.

I think you mean high refresh rates don't work with your monitor.......

no, my monitor can take up to 140 at 1024x768, is not about that.

The problem is with some old Ati Rage cards, I think they don't do well with 100hz and 32bit color depth, I changed it to 85hz and 24bit or 16 bit and now it works well.

the change can be made in control panel->display proprieties->settings->adapter->list all modes (for refresh), or simply go to settings for the color depth change.

The point I was trying to make is that the problem is not DosBox but rather your video card/monitor. 😀

Wow, that must suck.

Have you noticed a difference in CPU utilization between your main video card and the ATI Rage?

Just wondering how well the recent video rendering changes in DosBox work on older video cards....

Yes..a strange thing is that by default with the Ati Rage 2, when starting Dos Box it stays at 50% processor ussage...(I mean it stays 100% on a single core), even when it's doing nothing (just command prompt). Then to be able to play a game or something, I have to make DosBox frameskip 1 or 2...

I'm not sure if this is related to Amd 64 or win Xp(32 not 64) , if it's a Dual Core problem or if it's related 100% to this old video card ? I will try Dos Box when I get the new pci-express card back. For the moment I only can use DosBox with "surface" because "opengl" or "ddraw" don't seem to work with this Ati Rage 2 card.

On my old computer (Athlon 2500+, Geforce4 TI, windows 2000) I remembered that Dos Box wasn't eating so much "processor" when doing nothing ... and even when playing . It may have to do with the Geforce4 and the fact that I used "opengl" instead of the "surface" output...?

ok, I got my new 6800GT card (moded to Nvidia Quadro) and it's a HUGE difference on how Dosbox works on this card compared to the old Ati Rage 2 card.

On the Ati card, the processor was 50% (100% on one core), and I had to skip frames in order to play.

On the new card, DOSBox eats only around 5% ...on all modes (ddraw, surface, opengl, etc) in the same game.
