Just to let you know.
As usual you can't install anything from source to ubuntu and expect it to work... I just tried to install 0.72 dosbox -> no go... Or at least I can't get midi sounds working, midi works just fine with the "apt-get" version 0.65. Usually the problem is that in ubuntu all default directories are screwed.

MIDI:Can't find device:alsa, finding default handler.
MIDI:Opened device:none

I use exactly same .conf file with both versions.

That's strange, I always compile it from source on Ubuntu and never had any problems. I compiled DOSBox 0.72 a couple of days ago, and everything is working as it should, including MIDI. Are you running Ubuntu 7.04? Maybe there's something about how Timidity is set up?

Did you install the libalsa-dev package? (or whatever it is called) For MIDI, you need the ALSA library development package, it isn't handled by SDL AFAIK.
