It seems dark forces appeared on steam. According to this post of valve support it uses DOSBox.

Haven't tried the Steam version, but I own the original DOS version and it works fine under DOSBox with the dynamic core. The engine is a similar level of technology to that of the Doom engine, but with some more extensive features (noninteractive 3D models, bridges/platforms that you can walk both under and over, jumping/crouching, looking up/down, rotating and laterally moving platforms, etc.).

I'm curious as to how the made the Steam version. I know you can make it run without the CD without cracking it by copying some files around, so they probably did that.

Joystiq says the whole series is now on Steam: http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/17/star-wars-j … steam-in-force/

How do they make games like Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight work on modern OSes without problems, or do they even bother? That game has CD audio and early Direct3D support, and it had graphical artifacts (black squares) in the FMV cutscenes when I last tried running it in WinXP on a modern computer.

Edit: Commenters on Joystiq are saying the JK/MotS don't have the CD audio. Eww.

They didn't do jack shit for support of these games other than changing config file defaults. CD audio is missing from Dark Forces 2. (I didn't purchase it though.) Steam forums show this information.

Direct2Drive doesn't include Dark Forces 2 presumably because of missing cd music.

Apparently the dosbox.conf for DF1 kind of sucks, as people are sharing tweaks here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthr … ad.php?t=968354

Default DOSBox settings.

Sound: Sound Blaster 16
Music: 4-OP FM

So, nothing special.
