Output methods in OS X

I am using the OS X version of DOSBox. When I change the output method to opengl, I get lots of tearing, but when I use the output method of surface, there is no visible tearing. I run DOSBox in windowed mode. The game that I have been using to test is Wolfenstein 3d, but it is not exclusive to that game.

Could anyone shed any light on what the difference between these two output methods is that would cause tearing with one but not the other?

Is there any way to avoid the tearing when using opengl. I would like to use opengl so that I can use the scalers without a huge performance penalty?
