Hoe can I relocate or have a config file in the directory that contains the DOSBOX.exe file and target file, so as to have a unique config file for each DOSBOX/target application in different folders or partitions.

I am referring to the file in doc's and set's\me\local\applications. I copied that file to each directory of interest, modified the [autoexec] lines to pertain to that application, and ran DOSBOX. It still went back to doc's and set's etc. no matter which directory I was in.

If you start games by drag'n'drop of the game exe, place a dosbox.conf in the folder of the game exe.
If you start from a shortcut you have to use the commandline settings of dosbox as written in the readme

I have a copy of DOSBOX.exe in each folder, and click on that icon. There is no icon on the desktop (shortcut).
(I forgot to mention I am using Win XP).
I also have a dosbox-0.74.conf file in each folder with a different [autoexec].
