I love DOSBox, it's fantastic for running old games, and I have a few questions which I hope you can help me with;

1. Are there different DOSBox downloads, according to their abilities and their respective speeds (i.e. if they have a certain background process removed, which makes DOSBox run faster, but means it will only run with some games)? Thanks to DOSFreak's signature I know of;

http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/SVN_Builds

but is there a more detailed list, please?

2. Is there a sort of speed test utility that I can run in DOSBox, to see how fast each version of DOSBox runs on my PC (or is such a speed test built into DOSBox)? That way I'd know which version ran fast enough, to help me squeeze any extra % of speed for a demanding game (i.e. Carmageddon).

3. DOSBox had been at it's current version (0.74) for at least two years or so (I think?), I know work is progressing on it, but why hasn't there been a 'stable' (recommended) release since 0.74? I'm not complaining, of course, as 0.74 is great, I'm just surprised that there's not been a new stable release since then. I would have thought that there would have been at least a recommended SVN download version every few months, like there was with the XBox 1 version of XBMC.

4. Was it never made possible for DOSBox to use 'virtualisation' (I think it's called, where the program uses a real CPU to simulate a similar sort of CPU (i.e. both x86), instead of using brute force emulation) to speed up DOSBox on real PCs? I assume not, as (as far as I know) DOSBox can't do this on a real PC, but was this ever even theoretically possible? I ask as this is (I think?) what happens in a virtual machine, such as Virtual PC.

Anyway, many thanks for DOSBox, it's a great program, and thanks to anyone who reads/answers this thread.

(1) - Extra details are normally provided in each build's changelog, but I don't think you'll find one that significantly improves speed, at least not that I know of.

(2) - You could try TOPBENCH if you want to compare DOSBox against a database of real systems.

(3) - ...just let this go and back away slowly. 😉

(4) - No virtualization, but DOSBox's dynamic core is quite capable.

(3) Dosbox lacks developers. Developers lacks time. But you and everyone else can always join the dosbox team and release a new 'stable' (recommended) release or at least a recommended SVN download version every few months and help all dosbox users solving any problems with those new versions if there are any new bugs in them 😀
you can even make new releases monthly of weekly. it's all in your hands 😀

Isn't the compilation of SVN releases already well handled, for every SVN update...

Not sure I'd recommend further version compilations and the related confusion.

Basically there are currently 3 builds of DOSBox worth considering:
1. Official DOSBox builds. Stable, and are what bugs should be reported against. They don't get updated terribly often, however.
2. EmuCR SVN builds. These are built from the latest official DOSBox source, with few or no alterations. Think of it as an unofficial beta build that is good for seeing where DOSBox is officially headed.
3. Ykhwong's DOSBox SVN Daum builds. These are kitchen sink DOSBox SVN builds with lots of community "enhancements". I would recommend this to people wanting to see the best of what the greater DOSBox community has to offer, but don't even think about contacting the DOSBox developers for support or bug reports with this version!

Personally I use Ykhwong's builds unless I hit a bug/problem - at which point I revert to official 0.74 and report the bug if it still happens there.

No more love for the Megabuild?
