According to the Wiki, the imgmount command can be used to mount a cue sheet with a list of audio files rather than an ISO file. Unfortunately, I'm having a lot of problems trying to make this work properly.

First problem is that despite what the Wiki says, I can't get DOSBox to recognize MP3 files at all. I have tried creating them with a couple different programs and they sound perfect in every media player I try, but DOSBox won't play them.

So I converted the MP3 files to Ogg format. Now they all play, but they're playing about 30% slower than if they're played off CD or an ISO image of the CD.

I followed the format of the example CUE sheet exactly.

I'm using DOSBox 0.74.

What am I doing wrong?

Nobody has any idea why this feature doesn't work as described in the Wiki?

Music plays fine off the original disk. Music plays fine off a mounted Bin/Cue image. Music does not play from MP3 files. Music plays at a noticeably slower pace when played from Ogg files.

I'd chalk it up to a general problem with DOSBox playing audio files, but I've seen the GOG version of the game Blood use Ogg files in place of the CD audio and it worked fine. I even copied exactly what they did, but still doesn't work properly for me.

Obviously, I didn't make any major errors in the set up or the Ogg files wouldn't play at all, so I don't understand what's wrong.

Is there some other parameter I need to adjust to make this work properly?

Perhaps your system is too slow?

I tend to doubt it, since it can run other games with Ogg audio with no problems.

Is your DosBox version linked to a library that can decode mp3 / ogg files?

If it wasn't, the files wouldn't play at all, would they?

The game I was trying to convert the audio tracks to file was the original Redneck Rampage. No matter what I did, the Ogg files played slowly even though the game itself ran fine. For the hell of it, I took those Ogg files and plugged them into Blood, which played them at normal speed. I then tried other Ogg files with RR and they also played slowly.

I'd blame the game, but since it's DOSBox handling the emulation of the CD and the playing of the audio files, it doesn't seem like the game would have any effect on it. I suppose if the game were CPU intensive enough, it could cause the sound to play slowly, but then why would it only affect the Ogg files, while everything else, including the normal sound effects plays fine?

RR is no more complex than Blood and I had no problem playing Blood with Ogg files in the background.

Are WAV files supported?

I have the GOG.com version of Blood and yes it works fine.

In general I have noticed "interesting" things with disc images GOG.com use. Some games have an iso file (no CUE file to be found), but when trying to open it or burn it you get an error. Some disc images however burn fine.

Strike Commander is an example. You can however mount the iso and then copy the files "out of" DOSBox and then copy these files onto a CD and you have your original installation CD.

I try to get all the GOG.com games to run on my Pentium PC and sometimes it's quite challenging.

Some cue files have no times in them (just 00:00) yet they also work (Descent 2). And many bin/cue files don't burn properly...

Man if there were only a little tool that can read a CUE and automatically split the CD audio to oggs and reformat the CUE and split the data track off for DOSbox use.... Sega CD emulation have been living in this convenient luxury for over a decade.

I'm not sure. I could try it.

From the few that I've seen, they name the .CUE file .DAT and the .BIN file as .GOG.

I've noticed that when Ogg files are used, the times are all 00:00

You can split the data track off with Nero, then rip the audio tracks to Ogg. Not a one-step process, but it works.
