I'm using DOSBOX on my laptop which doesn't have any snazzy midi capabilities (without getting a Audigy 2 NX or Extigy: not an option.)

I've been messing with the DirectX Microsoft GS Synth and also trying to get Yamaha's SoftSynthesizer S-YXG50 to work. I have yet to get anything except the MS synth to work, which is not remotely as good as the Yamaha synth....

I'm using version 4.23.14 of the Yamaha synth, in WinXP.

Anyone have any experience with this?

go to windows' control panel -> sound options -> audio -> midi and choose the right device there

yeah that did it. the difference between the ms synth and the yamaha wasn't different enough for me to tell it was using it.

course, with headphones and not these crappy laptop speakers, it definitely sounds different 😀

Play "Dune 2" intro (choose Sound Canvas in game's setup) and you will hear the difference even on your laptop speakers 😀

I threw on headphones and played a little TIE Fighter.

Yes, the Yamaha S-YXG50 is absolutely obviously superior to the MS synth. Hell, it's probably equal or better than the Synergi 8MB SF2 I upload to my 8MB SB32 for DOS games. I think the variation, chorus, and reverb that it applies really helps too.
