I recently looked at 'Spycraft: The Great Game' for the first time and noticed an included TSTVIDEO.EXE
It is an VESA VBE/Core 2.0 Compliance Test Release 5.1a (Apr 17 1995)

I tested with what I assume are the six DosBox options which should? support VESA;
svga_s3 = compatible but fails half way through tests
svga_et3000 = not compatible
svga_et4000 = not compatible
svga_paradise = not compatible
vesa_nolfb = compatible but fails half way through tests
vesa_oldvbe = completed all short and long tests!

svga_s3
VBE OEM String: S3 Incorporated. Trio64
VBE Version: 2.0
Memory: 2048k
Extended CRTC addressing = Yes
8 bit wide DAC support = No
Linear framebuffer support = YES (located at 3072 MB)

vesa_nolfb
VBE OEM String: S3 Incorporated. Trio64
VBE Version: 2.0
Memory: 2048k
Extended CRTC addressing = Yes
8 bit wide DAC support = No
Linear framebuffer support = No

vesa_oldvbe
VBE OEM String: S3 Incorporated. Trio64
VBE Version: 1.2
Memory: 2048k
Extended CRTC addressing = Yes
8 bit wide DAC support = No
Linear framebuffer support = YES (located at 3072 MB)

I include the TSTVIDEO.EXE and test log files for your perusal.
Should the options other than vesa_oldvbe be able to pass the short and long tests as well?

1. We only care about about broken games. Not getting testing utilities to work.
2. Always test both the latest dosbox release and the latest SVN.
3. That utility is just the Scitech Display Doctor test utility but you are running it without the UNIVBE TSR loaded. Load the TSR and try your tests again.

That was using the latest dosbox (2010) release.
SVN, do you mean like the Taewoong release?
I was under the impression we didn't need to use UNIVBE TSR, I will try that and see what happens.

Update1:
I have tested with the game's included SETVIDEO.EXE UVBELib 5.1a Configuration utility (SciTech Software).
The results are exactly the same as previous tests.

I think I might have an updated UNIVBE utility somewhere so will try again in the future sometime so we'll
leave it like this for now. Maybe with a newer UNIVBE there won't be any issues?

PS: I have now also tried the above with Taewoong 2013 07 25 build and 'svga_s3' & 'vesa_nolfb' crash on running TSTVIDEO with page fault. 'vesa_oldvbe' can run TSTVIDEO and shows 8192k memory instead of 2048k but fails the 'short' quick test with page fault.

Thanks h-a-l-9000,

Hmm, I have another question about using VESA in DosBox but I think would be better placed under 'General'.
I'll do some searching first and then if need be post the question when I don't have so much on my plate.

Cheers. 😉
