after installing and reinstalling many times dosbox still wont work for me, has anyone else come across this problem?
the command prompt comes up but nothing else happens

There is not enough useful information. What game, where did you get it, where did you get the dosbox, etc.

a) graphics driver (check to make sure you're actually using the correct drivers for your OS. If you're using an integrated GPU, or switchable/hybrid graphics on a laptop, you need to get the driver from the manufacturer's website. Change the default graphics

b) Joystick, unplug it and see if it gets past that point.

c) for various SVN/alternate-build versions, like ECE, ykhwong, dosbox-x, etc that incorporate the mt-32 or fluidsynth midi synths, make sure the settings are present in the configuration file. Because of the various ways the synths can be built, they can also lockup at initialization if the underlying midi output driver is missing. They can also appear to lockup, eg fluidsynth can take several seconds to load a large soundfont, munt/mt-32 can take several seconds to initialize when the game starts due to programming sysex's.

d) turn off disney and tandy if you're not playing a game specifically playing a game for those.
