Dosbox freezes or crashes to desktop always when night comes. I have tried turning off audio, changing video modes and turning off ems and xms. I tried to run the game with no sound without dosbox and it didn't crash when the night game so the problem is with dosbox, but the game is running way too fast and I want to play with sound. I am using dosbox 0.72

Try the command core normal before you start the game (or change the core-setting in dosbox.conf).

If it runs too slow after this, try the command cycles 20000.

I managed to take a screen shot before dosbox closed and the error message was:
Exit to error: CPU:GRP5:Illegal Call 7
I think it has something to do with fading, because some other games crash too when the screen fades to black. This has happened sometimes in starcontrol 2 when selecting load game from the main menu. Usually it fades to black and then to the loading screen as it should but sometimes dosbox freezes or crashes.

If you launch DOSBox with the -noconsole option, those messages will go into 2 files (stdout.txt / stderr.txt) instead of to the console window.

ok thats good to know thanks.
I tried it, but it still doesn't give any error messages when the game freezes. Only when the game crashes to desktop it gives that error message. Most of the time it freezes so I don't get much error messages.

I have the original version 2.000. And the problem is not with the game, because it doesn't crash if I run it from windows with no sound.

I just found out an interesting thing. If I run the game from windows with sound & music turned on it gives error message: "Unablo to initialize your audio hardware" but the music & sounds work fine in game. But when night comes the game crashes so maybe the game is corrupted somehow, but that still doesn't explain why it crashes on dosbox sound turned off.

Well try getting hold of a non-broken copy first. There are lots of differents
between xp and dosbox which could lead to xp not crashing, yet the more
correct (in terms of msdos compatibility) beaviour can only be tested against
real dos anyways.

The initialization error means nothing to your problem. That is a speed problem and is to be expected on a modern PC without DOSBox. Copy the contents of the floppies to your HDD and reinstall. Remember, the floppy version needs to have the installer run to concatenate the resource file.

I downloaded a copy of the game from the internet (yea I know its illegal, but I needed to know if my version was corrupted or not. Files in floppies get easily corrupted) and it had the same problem so my game is not corrupted.

Okay... This isn't the original Quest for Glory, 2.000, is the VGA remake. Specifying that might help 😀
(1.200 is the latest of the original EGA release)

Anyway, I loaded it up in DOSBox, I can't seem to make mine crash. (DOSBox 0.72 on Ubuntu Linux 7.10)

Have you tried re-running INSTALL.EXE?

My settings attached.

Any difference?

That was obvious with the initialization error.

The policy here is to not support abandonware versions of games. These games are often modified or ripped versions, adding an extra layer of complexity to troubleshooting and unexpected problems. Much of my expertise in troubleshooting Sierra games comes from a lot of experimentation and trying to replicate issues that others report. This is done with legitimate copies.

All I can say is that the non-abandon floppy version runs flawlessly in DOSBox. I'm not going to start yet another abandonware debate here, but if I can't duplicate the problem, I can't easily solve it (and no, don't post a link to it here.) If the site that you downloaded it from has any forums you might ask there, as they should be familiar with their own rip.

If you want a real copy, look here. Just $9 US.

The original floppy version runs fine on my 386 or at least it did last time I checked. I just downloaded the abandon ware version to test if my original game was corrupted. Maybe I should set up my 386 again and see if it still works if not maybe I should get a new copy.
