Okay, first of all...
I'm using DOSBox 0.72 on Windows Vista.
I legally own the first four games (Anthology), but I downloaded the first three because I'm not sure I trust the CD right now (That, and I'm a little lazy).

Anyways... here's my frustrations (concerning the first two games, the first one being the VGA remake)

1. The game will randomly crash when entering a battle complaining about "too many handles" or something like that. This does not crash DOSBox, only the game.
2. Trying to export the hero at the end of QFG1 is complete and utter frustration. The file will not appear, and in the rare event that I managed to create the file (Magic User)...
3. ...The imported character in QFG2 had the exact same stats, equipment (except for an additional shield... which, amusingly, does not appear on the sprite while in battle, but still "exists", preventing spell casting), and spells, except the character had mysteriously become a fighter.

Also, I got King's Quest 5 for a member of my family (with the same version of DOSBox), and the game halts right before the ending... the same dialogue box is left up for eternity, and can't be shifted by. If you could help with this, too, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

I'd try the CD first to see if the problem exists for the "real" game as well. It showed a couple of times that downloaded copies have problems.

I concur with Dominus, try your CD. Abandonware versions of QfG1 often have substituted drivers which can cause memory errors and crashes. This is one of the main reasons that abandonware is not supported here. Though I have not tried QfG1 all the way through in .72, I have in at least as late as .65 with no issues using a genuine version of the game.

The KQ5 end crash is a known bug. You might try setting it to normal core with cycles set to around 5000, not auto and restoring to an earlier point, like before the final battle with Mordack.

Well, as it turns out, using the CD version was indeed the trick. Thanks all. Now I have a character that didn't mysteriously change from Magic user to Fighter. 🤣 and somehow wield a dagger and shield (I have to admit, that's a pretty amusing glitch). And he has pretty decent stats, too (although I guess I could've spent more time casting random spells at the environment to raise his stats a bit.)

oh, and QG1 works perfect in DOSbox 0.72, aside from the normal game glitches such as the entire palette going all screwy (which happens outside of DOSBox, too.)

Anyways, thanks for the KQ5 tip. I'll try it, soon.
