Hi, I know you're probably gonna say "not supported"
but I want to know if any version of OS/2 or nextstep could be run in DOSBox like Windows 95 and Windows 98

The requirements of Nextstep are : "IBM PC compatible x86, Sun SPARC, and HP PA-RISC." (only later releases, not the first)

And for OS/2 : "OS/2 targeted the 80286 processor with its 16-bit segmented memory mode." (until release 2.x, then they switched to 32 bit)

-Thanks to Wikipedia for this 😀

Will any of these boot in DOSBox ?

Thanks

DoesBox doesn't run W95 and 98 (and probably newer ones). 😉

For the other, like QBix said, try it, mostly success will be then with booting them from images...

And yes, we're interested in knowing the result. 🤑

Ok, I'll test it , I've got OS/2 1.x, 2.x and 3.x and I don't know which version of Nextstep I have.

Is it correct that DOSBox can't boot if the OS has an NT core ?

I only needed to know it could boot NT-like operating systems. Since OS/2 etc. aren't NT, they may work.

Or did you mean that OS/2 nor Nextstep won't work ?
Because I can test it if nobody did it before me...

Just go ahead and try to put a nail in a wall using a screwdriver. It may work, but there are more efficient ways to get the job done.

For stuff like that i'd use BOCHS, Qemu, VMWare, VirtualBox, or something similar.

Problem is, for drive access DOSBox only provides the BIOS INT13 interface. The drive controller hardware is not emulated. Advanced operating systems as NT (I don't know about OS/2) want to talk to the hardware directly bypassing INT13, and as they are unable to do so they panic rather early during boot. I. e. NT gives an "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" blue screen. (Additionally some CPU emulation enhancements as the WP bit are needed if we happen to have 😉 drive hardware emulaton).

Exactly the details he was asking for.

But if I'm not mistaking, OS/2 isn't NT, I'll test it soon with a preinstalled version of OS/2.

Thanks for the details.

As already noted above: it does not work for you.
