Dosbox 0.73, tested on Mac and Windows.
A lot of programs detects SB16, plays the sound through it, but in fact the sound is 8 bit !
The list of programs I tested:
- Impulse Tracker 2.14
- Cubic Player 2.0
- Inertia Player
- DMP 4
- XTC-player
and what is the problem ?
the soundblaster 16 can play both 8 and 16 bit sound depending on how you set the program up

Now I tested it more carefully: Impulse Tracker produces the real 16 bit sound, but other players (CP, DMP, XTC, Inertia) plays as 8 bit.
When that players detects SB16, they should plays true 16 bit. I remember how Cubic Player worked on the real hardware and it uses SB16 in 16 bit mode. In Dosbox I hear 8 bit sound instead.
Wait, I figured it out. Fast Tracker II plays true 16 bit.
The problem was in mixing routines in other players (for example, Cubic Player mixes an S3M-file in 8 bit, but XM-file in 16 bit).
