Hello. There is an old dos game tells about boy and his dog. It calls DOOFUS.
Long time ago, when i was on Windows 95 (or maybe it was Win 98 😕 ) i got this game and i liked very much music on the start intro.
Now i get the game again but i cant get music - there is no music when i start it in DosBox, there are only sounds. I use Win XP.
Game options says NO.ADLIB 😢

Can anyone help me to get music play please 😦
There are no an install.exe or setsound.exe to configure the game with sound/music.

Here is info from SiSoftware Sandra Lite XII.SP2b (2008.5.14.21)

Changed IRQ to 5 (it was 7) but there still no music.
All other settings in "c:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.conf" are in default values.
sbtype=sb16
sbbase=220
irq=5
dma=1
hdma=5
mixer=true
oplmode=auto
oplrate=22050

Do you have core=auto and cycles=auto in dosbox.conf? Maybe the program need very low cycles count to properly do autodetection.

Try with core=normal and cycles=3000

Try with core=normal and cycles=fixed 1500

Also, make sure you have got a lot of base memory available. This game needs about 582KB or RAM free.

You could also try loading loadfix before launching the game. Just type loadfix at the DOSBox prompt.

It works fine for me. Using DOSBox 0.72 with IRQ5 for SB16 and cycles=auto

eL_PuSHeR, tell me please what files you got.

Here my list:
DOOFUS.EXE
GAMEDATA.G-D
SMARTCHK.CPS
VGUARD.DAT

1500 are too slow for this game!
And here about RAM:

And by the way, after loading loadfix before launching the game, game cant start!

😒 Though dos music "SANXION ADLIB MUSICDISK [486/VGA/ADLIB]" (1st and 2nd) play very well!

I have only the first two: the other ones are from antivirus sotfware. You can delete them (smartchk.cps and vguard.dat).

GAMEDATA.G-D is 591.304 bytes in size.

MEM output from DOSBox is identical to yours.

Found this thread via google, with the same problems.
dh4rm4 is right about different versions and ADLIB drivers. I downloaded several versions of this game from various abandonware sites and the files were all slightly different.

I finally found one that worked, so here it is:

doofus.exe = 172 KB (173,232 bytes)
SHA1(doofus.exe) = d8bf1b28536b35102f22b6b84eb58f57f051db20
MD5 (doofus.exe) = fd521920113329b3f41c0bd2dc7e392a

gamedata.g-d = 580 KB (591,304 bytes)
SHA1(gamedata.g-d) = 3a6bee76d63add2451d1cc648e998ed6dde241cf
MD5 (gamedata.g-d) = bc594b2fc29c9a81fe978bc62feb24e2

Music & SFX work great when config is set to irq=5

Hope this helps someone else!
