I've managed to run Xcom (ufo defense) to the point at which the game needs to switch to the tactical mode at the start of a ground battle. When I select 'yes' to start the mission, the game freezes up. This may have something to do with the fact that I'm running it off the CD. Any ideas would be helpful, thanks in advance.

the last time this happened they just mounted it wrong.
be sure to mount it correctly.
(like that you have to type cd mps inside dosbox)

And try different sound configs (e.g. no GUS)

I run XCOM: Terror from the Deep without issue. I have the original CD version and I copied the CD files to the HDD, mounted C as the start up batch file and D as the CD rom (filies I had moved to my HDD) and it works fine. My favourite oldie and am very happy because the windows fix that was about crashes religiously. Had previously mounted D as the game CD in my DVD rom drive with no issues either and run with SB16 emulation at 22khz, 10000 cycles, 0 frame skip and full screen. Game runs smooth for me.

Give me a shout if I can help. I need to track down my CD version of UFO Defence. Its great too, though TFTD was (<*cough*> is) way better.
