how do you run when playing Alone in the dark with Dosbox?

I have recently been playing Alone in the Dark 1 using Dosbox and have had no luck getting my character to run. The manual says to make the character walk press the up arrow and to run briefly let up on the up arrown while walking and quickly press the up arrow to run. I have had no luck with this approach. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?

You press the up-arrow two times (more or less quickly).
Also try with less cycles (don't use cycles=auto in dosbox 0.65).

Slowing it down to 5000 cycles did the trick. Thanks! In the future, how do you know how many cycles to set the dosbox.conf file to?

You don't.
Basically most games should be fine with cycles=auto, except for older
games (which are best with the default ~3000 cycles, like monkey1)
and very old games (cga/tandy games, ~500 cycles is a good start).
