Hi,

This is my problem:

Application Gann Trader (graphical) that run under DOS cannot run on resolution higher than 640x480 (the base resolution) under XP nor under DOSBox. It works perfectly under Win98.

Apps has a utility that check the video card and recognizes the cards emulated by CVS: S3 and ET4000.

Best results are achieved with S3 where the app swallows the hi-res settings and the dosbox window gets enlarged. But the picture in it stretches instead of showing more pixel!!

Rules:

1) I will be glad to pay for professional help between 30 and 50EUSD depending on how much time it takes to you

2) I'll pay the ONLY THE FIRST ONE who solves my problem

3) I'll send movey via paypal

4) I can send screenshots

5) I can send the application (2.5MB)

6) I can execute your instructions

7) I am in good faith and you have to trust me both about deciding whom I will pay and be confident that I will pay.

😎 Solutions alternatives to DosBox can be accepted.

Thanks for your kind help

L

If you spend 30$ for fixing some app i hope you'll spend 3000$ to Qbix and Harekiet 😉

Anyways you could start off with nice screenshots (clean cvs builds if applicable)
and what screen modes the app uses/if it behaves different with univbe etc.

Hmm. I think you can save your quite possibly hard earned cash. We are here to help you (freely). Did you configured DOSBox? If so, how?

If your program uses VESA for SVGA modes and you have a newer nVIDIA card, YOU MAY BE OUT OF LUCK. Modern nVIDIA cards are known to have troubles using VESA modes beyond 640x480 resolution. I am still using some MS-DOS applications too that use VESA and I have no trouble with my ATi card, even reaching 1280x1024 resolution. But that could not be your case.

Please tell us more: hardware/software specifications. What did you try so far, etc...

I'm not sure but I have reasons to believe that the DOS version of Gann Trader has a maximum resolution of 640x480. There are similar programs that seem to do the same job as Gann Trader that work under Win3.x and maybe under Windows XP, such as Hot Trader and Trade Station

attachments in no logical order.

S3 gives best results enlarged window
all the others cards have the effect of ignoring the resolution change.

DOS box CVS just downloaded
Dosconf is attached. I dont think I messed around with it except svga

thanks

see you tomorrow

But that only applies if you try to run it directly from true MS-DOS or from the Windows NTVDM, right? If the application runs inside DOSBox I hope this will be a non-issue?

Done!

Execute and configure program and replace univbe.drv with this one (a hacked version).

Forgot to mention this program is quite stupid. Program is ms-dos only but the installation comes as a Windows one. (For creating shortcuts).

Also, this program works fine for me without using DOSBox (using NTVDM).

Also, keep in mind that you won't be able to PRINT using the official DOSBox 0.65 build. You need some printer enabled CVS version for that. I think HAL-9000 did something like that.

PS - DOSBox maximum implemented VESA resolution is 1024x768.

I don't know. It probably uses VESA for accessing SVGA modes. It doesn't have support for native videocards. This is just a wild guess.

The main executable uses DOS4G and it seems it has univbe embedded into it. At least there is a "univbe.drv" string present. I will try to disable it to see what happens.

UPDATE:

Removed the univbe.drv string by hacking it using a brute force method (I am not a programmer). I simply replaced some characters in the string.

THE PROGRAM IS STILL WORKING WELL (1024x768 with DOSBox and 1280x1024 using NTVDM). GOOD NEWS IS THAT IT DOESN'T NEED UNIVESA ANYMORE. Stupid programmers.

Ouch. Two in the morning. I have got to get some serious sleep.

Good bye for now.

UPDATE 2:

Program also works fine when you DELETE the univbe.drv file. This is a even easier method. You don't need to modify anything. Again, stupid programmers.

As we are talking above, just DELETE UNIVBE.DRV after configuring the program. Then, run it as usual. It should work. You don't need any kind of external VESA anymore. DOSBox has built-in VESA bios extensions (up to 1024x768 resolution).

great troubleshooting El_PuSHeR !
Were you able to test it with a plain cvs/0.65 build as well (so not having that multiple chipset patch ?)

Qbix:

I only tested it using official 0.65 build. I don't have any downloaded CVS version right now.

ldd2871:

Save your money as you may need it. Or maybe the DOSBox staff accepts donations. I don't know.

It's great to see how many people as Qbix, Harekiet, WD, Vasyl, HAL-9000 (and many others) are doing a great effort, hard selfless work for everyone. The world would be better with more people like these. What I am trying to explain is that those people are doing it for free, for the rest of us to enjoy. Truly remarkable.

Last word: I think your appreciation is reward enough. We all should experience the feeling of making others feel good too. I hope you keep visiting the forums.

Best regards.

Link to the PayPal donation page for DOSBox:

http://sourceforge.net/donate/index.php?group_id=52551

I am not sure if the donation goes to Harekiet, Qbix, or to a SourceForge pool.
