I had a hard time to get X-COM 1 to work in OS X 10.4 with DosBox 0.72. I had this problem where ufo gets stuck in this endless executable loop (tactical-black-geoscape). The solution was NOT TO RUN install 😀 download the old dos version and just unpack it, you can run the game from full.bat or go.com.

unfortunately I could not get any sound output yet 🙁

I highly recommend using DosBox GameLauncher, it makes life easy.

hmm - I'm running DOSBox 0.72 in XP and I can't get the sound for the DOS version of X-COM working either. I've tried all the SB emulations and the Gravis - midi won't even pass though to the system's midi player. I haven't had this problem before. If you work it out, let me know.

Exactly the same situation here as the OP. If you or anyone else find a way to make the sound work with x-com1 or x-com2 in OSX, please give us a tip! X-com is too good be without 😉

Unless you cough up with information about how you have configured DOSBox (any changes from the default!), how you mount the DOSBox drives, how you installed the game, what selections you made during sound setup, then NO ONE will be able to help you.

Alright, true that. Lets see:
Other than editing the "DOSBox Preferences"-file for quick mounting there isn't anything changed from the default makeup. For thouse that havn't been able to start the game up, this is what I have done soo far:

DOSBox:
* Installed DOSBox (Made a folder in applications).
* Dragged the "DOSBox Preferences"-file to: /users/{myusername}/preferences/
* Added the following at the [autoexec]-tag:
mount c ~/xcom
c:
* Moved my gamefolder named xcom to: /users/{myusername}/

The location of the game is easy changed to a better one, but I tried to keep it as simple as possible. Doing this I was able to make xcom run on my intel MBP but without sound. As of now I have systematicly (sp?) been trying diffrent sound-card / IRQ / DMA -combinations but as of yet I havn't had any luck (Tried about 20-30 diffrent ones). I have even been trying to get the (dos) version starting on my "Virtual PC" (Parallels desktop with WinXP) but ran into the same problem. The game works fine except for the sound.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Try mount c ~
Select sound blaster, irq7, dma1, address 220. Assure that the data
is saved (all files have full permissions etc.)

I'm having trouble getting X-COM to work in OS X. I have brought the folder to my /(myusername) folder and mounted it properly but whenever I try running the UFO.exe it says "This program cannot be run in DOS mode." I have made no alterations to the configuration of DOXBox.

I know I've successfully mounted the folder as I can search the directory. I've attempted running this with the GUI version of DOSBox as well to no avail.

you are trying to run the windows version of Xcom or a selfextracting windows archive inside dosbox.

Yes indeed, I just assumed the Abandonia version would be dos.
